Sage, a 6-foot-2 guard from Orono High School, spent the spring and summer playing with Powerhouse Hoops where he honed his game against some of the best competition around the country.
Normally a wing for his high school team, Sage spent a bulk of the season with Powerhouse playing point guard, taking on a much larger role with the ball in his hands than he was used to.
“I played mostly point guard which was different considering I hadn’t don that much,” Sage said. “It was good to get used to playing with the ball more and being in more of a playmaker role.”
Sage’s strength is his long range shooting and ability to move without the ball still. But in the past, he could be neutralized by a hard closeout because he wasn’t always comfortable breaking down rotating defenses. That’s not the case anymore and even if Sage is never a full time point guard, his understanding of the game is enhanced, as is his ball handling ability.
“I feel like I can play point when needed to during this season,” said Sage. “When I was at Mound I had some more playmaker responsibility. Last year I didn’t do that as much but I think I can get back to doing that this upcoming year.”
Sage has drawn interest from a handful of Division II, Division III and junior colleges about playing at the next level.
“I’ve got an offer from Lake Region State and that is one that interests me a lot,” said Sage. “I’ve been talking to Winona State, St. Cloud State and a handful of DIIIs. I’ve visited a lot of these schools as well.”
