Recruiting Report: Ethan Helwig (2019)
Ethan Helwig had a phenomenal July for the Illinois Stars. It was our first time extensively evaluating him and we came away very impressed with the 6’4” Metea Valley wing. He is a long and wiry wing that can score effectively at all three levels. Shot it lights out in multiple games. Quick and efficient stroke that he drilled at a high rate especially off the catch. Good athlete that likes to attack the hoop especially in transition where he finishes well around the cup. D1 prospect.
How did it go on the circuit with Illinois Stars?
“We were on the PowerAde Circuit in the spring. We started 4-0 in the first session and then the last two we lost two games. We went into Charlotte 10-2 I think. We played well there and got to the championship game where we lost to Team Thad so we came in second.”
What are the strengths in his game?
“I think my slashing is pretty good. I need to work on finishing at the rim more.”
He spoke about preparing for next year and his junior season at Metea Valley.
“I am the focal point of our high school team because we aren’t that strong right now with all of our seniors leaving. That was the core of our team from last year. I am going to have to take a leadership in our team and take us as far as we can in the playoffs.”
What is he looking forward to about being the leader?
“Getting the team to buy in. It is going to be a fun season because I have been playing with these guys for the last two years. The seniors from last year didn’t really buy into the process so that is why we were kind of up and down last year. I think we will be at our highest point this season.”
A couple colleges have shown interest.
“Eastern Illinois has talked to me. I have got something from Holy Cross.”
Eastern Illinois is a program he has been out to see.
“I went to their camp. They have some big guys. They like to play up tempo. Their coach gets into it.”
