Recruiting Report: Bryce Thompson (2020)
The next national name out of Oklahoma is 2020 6’5 Wing Bryce Thompson. This summer Thompson vaulted from a great freshmen season at Booker T. Washington into a fantastic showing with Oklahoma Run PWP on the Under Armour Circuit. Recently, Thompson took a visit to Kansas. Get to know the next Oklahoma phenom, Bryce Thompson. Prep Hoops talks with Thompson about his visit to Kansas, his upcoming sophomore season and what Thompson is working on to improve his game.
Earlier this week Thompson got his first look as a high school national prospect at Kansas. He met with Head Coach Bill Self and several assistants as they toured the campus and talked about the future. Thompson holds seven Division I offers with several High Major Division I programs already pursuing him. Kansas has not offered but is showing keen interest.
Thompson has a great connection with the Kansas staff coming into the visit with his tight family connection. Bill Self coached Bryce’s father Rod at the University of Tulsa. Thompson had great things to say about his experience at Kansas.
“The visit was great,” said Thompson. “The staff are good people. So it was a great experience.”
Thompson says he does not have a dream school. But one would have to think if a Kansas offer comes they would have a great chance to land Thompson. The recruitment of Thompson is already off to a blazing fast start. The wisdom of Thompson at his young age shines brightly on and off the court. Although the recruitment of Thompson has been fast and furious, he seems to be taking it very well.
“It has been fun,” said Thompson. “I’m glad I get to go through it earlier. Getting to know the coaches and the process and how it works is fun right now.”
As the school year starts, Booker T. Washington moves down to 5A in hoops making them an instant favorite for the Gold Ball after their trip to the Class 6A Championship game a year ago. When talking about his goals, it is very evident Thompson is eyeing a state championship with the Hornets.
“Trying to win a gold ball for one,” said Thompson. We got silver last year. It will be fun with Coach Phipps and the players we have back and adding Trey. Just want to build on the Booker T. tradition.”
Thompson will have an opportunity to etch himself among some of the greats to come from the Hornets basketball program. One significant change from a year ago is Conley Phipps taking over as the head coach. Phipps is yet another great coach for Booker T. Washington. He walks into a great situation with a ton of talent. The Hornets also gained Trey Phipps, Conley’s son. The Booker T. Washington program continues to boom with talent.
Thompson is an elite scorer with a first jump shot. He gleams with high confidence and leadership on the court. It seems everytime Thompson steps on the court he has gotten a little taller. At 6’5 with his shooting talents, it is easy to see why Thompson has caught High Major Division I programs eyes.
Thompson is always looking to improve as a player.
“Understanding match ups,” said Thompson. “I need to get stronger and work on other things.”
Thompson can be featured in the nations top 100 players in the 2020 Class. He will be a fun prospect to track over his high school career with Booker T. Washington and Oklahoma Run PWP. Thompson holds offers from Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Tulsa, ORU, Texas A&M, DePaul and Houston.
