Recruiting report 2018: Sherwyn Devonish
Sherwyn Devonish, 6’0″, PG, 2018. Dr. Henry Wise Pumas HS.Upper Marlboro, MD.
Grassroots Team: MD Finest
This coming season Sherwyn will man the PG position for the Wise Pumas who we project to be of the best teams in Washington, DC DMV. We saw Wise HS & Sherwyn at the DeMatha BSN Summer League & The University of MD Team Games in which Wise came in 2nd place. In the MD games finals, Wise gave St. Frances of Baltimore who has the potential to be a top 30 nationally ranked team, all they could handle in a very tough game. Sherwyn is a very tough, heady & crafty PG who brings high energy & leadership to the Pumas. We consider him one of the most underrated PGs in Maryland/DC with the upside of a D1 prospect.
We really like Sherwyn’s compact, tight & shifty style of play which allows him to protect the ball & get thru small seams of the defense. Sherwyn possesses a very high basketball IQ and there is no wasted motion in his play. On offense he wants to get Wise into quick organized ball movement. Sherwyn picks his spots very well & he knows when to facilitate vs scoring where he is capable of scoring in bunches . He says, “My first priority is to run the team offense & get my teammates open looks. I am a play-maker & I use my quickness & agility to beat my defenders off the dribble to hit open teammates. Additionally, I can set up my defender catching him off guard & blow by him. I try to be one play ahead & I am always scanning & reading my options on the court which comes natural. If an opponent is playing zone defense I am not passive & I split the seams in the zone or traps. Leadership is another strong point. I am vocal and lead by example. I think I have great instincts on when to praise a teammates or get in their ear.”
Whenever there is an opportunity, Sherwyn will push the ball up court & he excels in the transition game where he maneuvers very well in traffic. In the half court sets, he runs the Wise motion offense to perfection. Sherwyn adds, “Ball handling is another strong point & I can use both hands to beat full court & half court on ball pressure with my handle.”We have seen Sherwyn score very well from all 3 levels, and he has a fantastic pull up game in which he can stop on a dime. When needed Sherwyn finishes at the rim with an array of acrobatic moves using both hands and he can score from both sides of the floor. We really like his shooting stroke and Sherwyn has range beyond the 3 point line. Head Wise Coach Rob Garner says. “Sherwyn Devonish makes us the best. His leadership, presence, and experience will be highly needed to accomplish our team goals this year. We are extremely Blessed to have him.”
On the defensive end Sherwyn is very scrappy & aggressive. He says, “I like to play on ball pressure man to man defense & beat my opponent to his desired spot. I like to press & I am usually good for few steals per game.”Last season Sherwyn averaged 13.5 ppg, 6 assists plus several steals per game & was awarded to the Honorable Mention All MD State 4A ( top classification in MD) by MD sports Access. He had a very successful summer in the DeMatha BSN Summer League & playing for Maryland’ Finest in grassroots play. We think Sherwyn has the ability to climb the rankings this year if the new & reloaded Wise Pumas can continue their excellent development from this spring & summer into the regular season & playoffs.
In the classroom Sherwyn us an excellent student with a 3.6 GPA & he interested in majoring in Forensic Science or Culinary Studies in college. He considers his parents, uncle & Coaches at Wise as his role models. In basketball Sherwyn names Alan Iverson as his role model & studies AI’s playing style on YouTube. Since the end of summer basketball Sherwyn is working out with a Strength & Conditioning Program developed by Coach Charles Pickard & runs pickups at various gyms. To date Sherwyn has an offer from Bowie Sate & interest from UMass Lowell, Toledo, Coppin State, St Thomas Aquinas, Wheeling Jesuit. We are looking forward to watching Wise HS & Sherwyn this season & will provide live game reports in addition to individual player reports. Sherwyn adds, “Our team goal is to return to the University of Maryland again & win a MD 4A State Title. I think we have the Coaches, players, chemistry & determination to win another Title like we did in 2013/14 under Coach Garner.
