Prospect Spotlight: Zack Shimek (2020)
A rising star in Washington’s 2020 class, Inglemoor point guard Zack Shimek already has a year of varsity under his belt, and the rising-sophomore will have a huge role with the Vikings this winter.
A 5-foot-10 point guard, Shimek recently wrapped up his 15U season with FOH, and mentioned what his roles are with each of his teams, high school and grassroots.
“On my high school team and AAU team I have different roles. On My AAU team, I’m not the main scorer, so I average a lot more assists than points. I come in and run the offense and distribute a lot. I’ll usually hit a 3 or two and then just work on distributing the ball,” said Shimek.
“In high school, last year I came off the bench and would back up the senior point guard, and I would run the offense when I came in. We lost six seniors though, so this year, I’ll be starting and probably have to be the main scorer.”
One area of emphasis this spring and summer on the grassroots circuit was to improve his jumper, and he says he did just that while playing with Friends Of Hoops.
“After the high school season I went to the gym and got up a lot more shots, and I noticed a big improvement with my outside shooting,” said Shimek. “In my last game in Vegas I went 3-3 from 3s, and that’s been my my biggest improvement.”
Now, as he prepares for his sophomore season, he mentioned to PHWA some goals for the coming winter.
“I want to have a successful season, we have some talented guys coming back, and I think we could have a successful season. Personally, I just want to average around 20 points and shoot a high-percentage and be efficient,” said Shimek.
“And I just want to help the team as much as possible.”
