Prospect Spotlight: Will Miller (2018)
Our Lady of Mount Carmel is a small school located in Essex, Maryland. Although the number of students may be small, the talent their basketball program is incredible. After putting together an impressive 29-11 record that included appearances in both the MIAA and BCL Conference Championship last season, the bar has been set for the team in 2017-18 to live up to expectations.
Losing Terry Nolan (George Washington) and Christian Evans (Hood College) would usually put a program in a tough place, but the Cougars return much of their core and have had a few key players transfer in to put help replace their production. One of the players in the spotlight will be guard Will Miller.
Miller is a 6-foot combo guard and is one of the best three-point shooters in the area. Last season he averaged 12 points, three assists, and three rebounds per game. His role was to stretch the floor so players such as Nolan, Dwight Felton (2018) and others had driving lanes to attack the basket.
Although Miller is labeled as a shooter, he can effectively attack close outs when they’re rushed. Off of that, he has nice pace and balance into his one or two-dribble pull up jumper in the mid-range.
There comes a time when reality hits, though. Miller won’t be featured as the shooting guard on too many college teams due to his height. He took that into consideration this summer on what he wanted to polish.
“Ball handling,” Miller said about what he has improved on most from this summer. “I know I’m going to have to be a player that has to facilitate more at the next level.”
Miller continued by adding he wants to become more willing to make the extra pass. He’s been a shooter his entire life. It’s tough to make a shooter (an efficient one at that) pass up an shot opportunity for an open shot for a teammate, but Miller knows that’s what it will take to get noticed by colleges.
Hampton and Norfolk State expressed interest, Miller told PrepHoops. Marymount (Division III) has also been recruiting Miller pretty aggressively. He plans on showing how he can become more dynamic and still have his team rattle off wins in the upcoming season.
In terms of what he is looking for in a collegiate program:
“I’m a real loyalty type of guy, so I’m looking for a team that shares a brotherhood,” Miller said. “Knowing someone really has your back on the court makes you play harder when you have a brother beside you.”
