Prospect Spotlight: Solomon Mathis (2018)
Solomon Mathis is a 6’0 guard from Kentucky Country Day in Louisville, KY. As a junior, Mathis averaged 17 points and 3 rebounds per game, shooting over 46% from the field. “My high school season last year was a break out year for me. I averaged 17 points per game and 2 steals,” said Mathis about his thoughts on last season. “My best game was against Ballard, scoring 25 points and dishing out 5 assists. I also had a 38 point game, where I shot 12/14 from the field.”
Mathis has lofty goals for his senior season. “Going into the 2017 – 2018 season for my high school, our team is very young. My main goal is to make everyone around me better. I think this upcoming year will be a good test of my leadership skills. I also want to establish myself as one of the more dominant guards in the state, and make sure there is no doubt about it.”
This summer Mathis played on the Adidas Silver circuit with Team (CKY) Vision. “Summer ball this year went great for me. I averaged 12 points in the spring and finished up the summer strong, averaging 15 points in July.” Some of Solomon’s most notable games came against Upward Stars and Ohio Basketball Club, both compete at the Adidas Gold circuit level. In both contests, Mathis scored 16 points.
When not at tournaments or at school practices, Mathis works extremely hard on improving his body, shooting with range, and paying close attention to sharpening his fundamentals.
Solomon describe his game to us; “I think my game is rather unique, compared to most. Anybody who has watched me play, knows I have one the smoothest and quickest pulls they’ve ever seen. Everyone knows that’s what I’m going to do, but they still can’t stop it. I love to get out and run in transition, and push the tempo. On the other hand, I take pride in locking up the other teams best player and shutting them down.
Mathis gets it done in the classroom, too. ” I attend Kentucky Country Day School, the #1 ranked school in Kentucky for academics. In the classroom I am an A & B student and have a 3.2 GPA.
Currently holding no offers, Mathis does have interest from Army-West Point, NYU, Franklin-Marshall, Kenyon, and Kentucky Wesleyan. He is also on Brown’s watch-list. In terms of picking a school, I want to attend a school that has a good balance of academics and athletics. I want to attend a school where my degree will matter when applying for jobs. As far as a basketball program, I want to go where I fit in best, and be pushed to be the best version of myself.”
