Prospect Spotlight: Marsei Caston (2019)
In this article:
Calusa Prep rising junior Marsei Caston’s energy level is on 10 at all times. This is a guy who never lacks spirit or gives you a shell of himself, on the court.
At July’s Raptors Elite ID4 Invitational, Caston was seen being a defensive threat from start to finish. He kept his hands active on-the-ball, never let a single ball-handler drive past him. He garnered a few steals because of it.
Caston is mighty quick. And even more elusive. If he pokes a steal away from someone, he’s great at breaking away from the pack and getting a fastbreak finish on his own. Caston is a player teammates love running the transition offense, with. Whether the left or the right hand, he’s going to give you a solid finish, hands down.
To stay in shape, Caston has been biking every day. He takes to local hills to get a run in, and has been running on sand to get his footwork to a new level. All of this happens without having a trainer. Any court that offers a good run at that time, Caston is ready to lace up and test certain skills he’s been working on.
The next skill on the list? Leadership.
“It’s simple, I’ve just never did it,” Caston admitted. “I’ve always played the two-guard, but now the one. Coaches have told me I need to be a leader.”
The teams he’s on, Calusa and his AAU team CP25, will make it easy to get the trial and error, in. He said everyone on CP has a family vibe about them. July was his first month ever playing with the team.
But, he thinks they can all go the distance, together.
“We have the tools,” Caston said. “We have some ESPN players. I think we can do what it takes, it’s just going to take some hard work in practice.
