Prospect Spotlight: Marquise Smith (2018)
Marquise Smith hadn’t played with the Comets before this summer. He made the most of his one summer.
Smith, a 6-foot-1 point guard from St. Cloud Apollo, spent the grassroots season playing with Comets Thuok where he had the opportunity to run a team and play against some of the best collections of talent around the state.
“It went good, we did pretty well as a team,” said Smith. “Had our ups and downs. I thought it was a lot of fun to get out and play.”
Smith averaged 13 points per game for a young and inexperienced St. Cloud Apollo team as a junior, serving as one of the bright spots in an otherwise down season. His experiences playing with Comets should only make him better.
“This was my first year playing with Comets,” said Smith. “It was great to be able to play against other top playres. You see how good you have to get and you can learn a lot. I feel like I got a lot better.”
An aggressive point guard, Smith excels at getting to the paint and creating off the dribble. He’s a twitchy, explosive lead guard who can finish in traffic or find open teammates when he breaks down his defenders. He’s particularly strong in transition as well and he’s a menace especially in the passing lanes as a defender.
Colleges have been in touch with Smith’s coaches mostly to this point and Smith said he’s hoping to draw some more interest during the year.
“I still have this year,” said Smith. “I’m hoping I can showcase my game and impress coaches. I think this will be a big year for us so I’m excited.”
