Prospect Spotlight: Dylan McGirt
Desert Mountain High School recently hired Coach Mark Shumaker after an 8 win season and Coach Satterlie leaving to explore other endeavors. Despite losing a good portion of their 8 win team, Desert Mountain looked very promising this July. In fact, they won the ACU Team Camp, which featured a number of talent teams. Dylan McGirt 6’0 PG 2019, who did not have extensive playing time last year, looked very capable of making an impact at the varsity level. Further, McGirt had a very successful July with Blue Chips Nation.

According to MaxPreps, McGirt scored 1 point last season. It is safe to say that McGirt will have more success and opportunities than he had as a Sophomore. One of the biggest reasons for this expected improvement is the work that McGirt has put in this off-season. In fact, he mentioned that he has been working out with Coach Turrell of Blue Chip Nation at 6 AM. The workouts have largely focused on “improving my versatility in one on one moves”. In addition, he has “gotten a lot bigger and stronger”.
As mentioned earlier, Desert Mountain had a successful summer and McGirt was a key part of the success. He manages the tempo of the game well offensively. Further, he understands his role as the point guard. He feels like “I make my team go and when I’m on the court, I love to get everybody involved”.
McGirt has attributed a lot of the success that he has had recently with Desert Mountain to his club experience. He plays with Blue Chip Nation. He stated, “they support me they do a solid job of getting my name out there”. In addition to providing support and exposure, he spoke highly of Coach Turrell and the work that they have put in together.
As far as his goals for the upcoming season are concerned, he stated that he wants “to be the go to guy” along with other talented 2019 Brandon Kron. Further, he wants to “have a winning season” and to “make 1st team all-region”. Further, he is excited about the opportunity to play for Coach Shumaker, [he] is a great coach and really pushes us to be our best. He knows the game and he is a great teacher of the game”.
Dylan McGirt College Interest
Despite his strong play with July, McGirt noted that he has not received any interest directly. With that said, he noted that one of his coaches has “said he got a call about interest from Columbia University”.
McGirt is only going into his Junior season; thus there is plenty of time. He has done his part in the classroom and is currently at a “3.567”. However, he has not taken the ACT or SAT. Due to his grades and work ethic, he has opened up the potential for himself to play at a number of different levels.
As far as what he is looking for in a school, “I’m looking for a good education and a close relationship with a coach”. Further, he wants to “feel like I’m at home with my school and I want my coach to be like my second dad [who] guides me through my path”. He also mentioned that although those are his two biggest concerns, education is the top priority. At this point, he is interested in “sports management or business”.
Dylan McGirt College Projection
At this point, McGirt looks like a solid NCAA Division II or III prospect. He manages the tempo of the game well, has a consistent shot, and has improved his ability to get into the paint. He is a skilled prospect who has done what is necessary to ensure that he is able to play at any level. This is due to taking care of business in the classroom.
