Logan 5-foot-9 guard Anthony McDade could become one of Utah’s best scorers this season, and he’s been working hard this spring and summer to help make that happen.
A quick and electric lead guard, McDade mentioned his specific skill-set to PHUT during a recent phone interview.
“I consider myself a score-first point guard, and I make the right play and have really good court-vision. Defensively, I get in the passing lanes, and play on-ball defense pretty good, said McDade. ”
“My mid-range is good, but my 3-point shot is probably the best, and I can get to the rim and dish it off.”
He added: “I need to get better at finishing at the basket. I can get there whenever I want, but I need to get more consistent at finishing against the big guys, and getting my body into them.”
This spring and summer he played some 16U and 17U ball, and says he excelled.
“I think this was my best summer so far. I played really well, especially with the 16s,” said McDade. “I shot really well and averaged about four of five assists and two or three steals.”
Because he’s been able to showcase himself so well this offseason, McDade says some very initial D1 recruitment has come his way.
“Weber State sent me an email for their elite camp, and Pepperdine too. That’s it so far,” said McDade.
“I hope it (recruitment) starts coming in, I really want to play college ball. And I’m looking into those camps.”
But before he worries about his recruitment too much, McDade has a junior season ahead of him, where he’ll be a leader for the Grizzlies.
“Me and my teammates are going to be in the gym and the weight room this fall, and will just be hanging around each other trying to get better chemistry,” said McDade, who started last season as a sophomore.
“And I think my role this year is going to be a little bit more of a scorer. My coach wants me to lead the team a little bit, score a little bit more, and to D up a little more.”
