Nike Academy Championship Standouts
The Nike Basketball Academy is one of the premier events of the summer and it officially closes out the grassroots season. In California 30 of the nations top players participated in week long camp which ended Saturday with the championship game. PrepHoops takes a look at the standouts from the final game of the summer!
PG Ayo Dosunmu (Mac Irvin Fire)
The top prospect in the state of Illinois showed why he is such a coveted recruit. Got a couple of his early shots blocked, but he stayed aggressive and was very productive. Dosunmu is a slick handling guard that gets in the lane with easy accelleration. He showed that multiple times getting to the rim consistently where he finished through contact for multiple and-1s. Dosunmu is an acrobatic guard that had a couple up and under finishes. Speed in the open floor and has a go to euro step to convert. Worked well in the pick and roll along with several nice passes in the open floor. Didn’t shoot it well from three. He made some key plays down the stretch including some big free throws. The Chicago star from Morgan Park had 18 points.
SF Jaylen Hoard (Team CP3)
Hoard is a good sized wing with 3 and D potential. The athletic scorer has a quick release on his shot and made jumpers at a high rate. Also mixed in a few takes to the hoop. Explosive first step.
PG Tre Jones (Howard Pulley)
Jones is just a kid that makes winning plays. Did it again highlighted by a steal that he ended with an outlet pass on the money while still on the ground. The Duke commit pushes the tempo and can finish at the rim. Needs to improve perimeter shooting.
SF Keldon Johnson (Boo Williams)
This top 15 prospect nationally continues to see his stock rise every game he is on the floor. Strong and physical wing with broad shoulders. Johnson loves to slash and attack downhill. All game long he was getting to the rim finishing with powerful slams in both the half court and transition. Mixed in some mid-range jumpers and floaters. Power and attacking wing that plays with a motor.
F Darius Bazley (Meanstreets)
Bazley saw his stock rise playing with Meanstreets this spring/summer. The combo forward has size and skill to play both forward postions at the next level. His length and awarness will make him a beast in the Syracuse 2-3 zone. Protects the rim with his shot blocking ability. Runs the floor very well. Can attack from the high post. Solid passer as well. Very versatile forward.
SF Louis King (Team Final)
King is another jumbo wing with skill. The Team Final small forward is a sound perimeter shooter as he connected on several three point shots. Got on the offensive glass as well.
SF Cole Swider (BABC)
The Villanova commit was outstanding! This tough and uber skilled small forward is a lights out perimeter shooter. Drilled shots both pulling up and off the catch. That is what he is known for. Free and easy release and sets it up great. We were extremely impressed with his passing feel. Very active player that has a nose for the ball. Solid rebounder.
SG Robert Woodard (MEBO)
Woodard is a power wing that just gets buckets! He is physical around the hoop finishing through contact and rebounding. Also connected on a pair of threes.
PF Daniel Oturu (Howard Pulley)
The Minnesota commit is a broad shoulder post that just goes about his business and gets stuff done. He didn’t get many post touches, but stands out with his rebounding and defense inside. Carves out space to score.
PF James Wiseman (Team Penny)
Wiseman was the best prospect on the floor and he was the youngest player as the lone 2019. The 6-10 power forward is a thin and wiry lefty with a world of potential. He is ELITE running the floor and when he plays with the motor he did in this game he gets five dunks with ease. Big time rim runner. His ability to rebound, go coast to coast, and finish at his size is special. Explosive second jump getting on the glass for put backs. Quality shooter that can hit from mid-range as well as three. Has a chance to be an elite shot blocker. For me he is either the #1 or #2 prospect nationally in 2019.
