NAIA & D3 Targets
There’s still plenty of time to get out and recruit this summer and fall, and — especially for D3 and NAIA coaches — there could be a different showcase to be at every weekend up until November. Below, we’ve profiled eight guys from Iowa’s 2018 class who we believe would make fine players at NAIA and D3 schools.
Tyler DeBondt, 6’1 PG (East Marshall)
Smart, poised, under control, DeBondt is one of the more polished true point guards in Iowa, and has the assist:turnover ration to prove it. Last season as a junior he assisted 5.2 times for every one turnover.
Carter Bachman, 6’7 C (Ankeny Centennial)
He won’t dunk over you but he’ll likely outwork you in the paint. A tall and effective post for Ankeny Centennial, Bachman could be seen churning in the paint all spring and summer for Team Iowa, and should see his production spike next season for the Jags because of it.
Trey Drummond, 6’1 PG (Ballard)
He posted decent numbers last season for Ballard, but he really stands out when you see him in person. Drummond is an athletic and explosive lead guard who could be seen flashing some pretty slick handles this summer for Kingdom Hoops Red. He’ll be top dog with the Bombers this season.
Nick Johnson, 6’6 F (Hoover)
After missing his junior season with an ACL injury, Johnson says his recruitment took a hit. That means the versatile and tough stretch-four’s recruitment is wide-open heading into his senior season at Hoover, where he’ll look to fill a void left by all-state post, Doug Wilson.
Caden Kickbush, 6’4 G/F (Gladbrook-Reinbeck)
A long and versatile wing, Kickbush was at times impressive at the state tournament last March for the Rebels. And as he heads into his senior season without Joe Smoldt dominating the ball, Kickbush could be a guy who sees his stock rise considerably
Tanner Foster, 6’5 F (Lynnville-Sully)
Another versatile threat, Foster was seen routinely connecting on 3-balls this summer with Iowa Intensity’s 17U squad. During the regular season, he’s a slender and agile stretch-four for the Hawks, who averaged 11.3 points and 4.6 rebounds last season as a junior.
DeSean Foy, 6’2 G (Sioux City West)
The Wolverines have an overload of college prospects on their roster this season. And though high-level prospect Cliff McCray has been written about plenty, it’s Foy who has perhaps flown a bit under the radar. He was good last season as a junior, and has been grinding this summer each weekend to improve his game. Check him out.
Willie Tunks, 6’3 G (Southeast Polk)
When we first saw Tunks, he was a 5-foot-1 rising sophomore who could shoot the lights out. Well, some things have changed dramatically. He’s now a 6-foot-3 rising senior, who can still shoot the lights out. Southeast Polk may not be known for their hoops of late, but he (along with fellow 2018 Grant Arnold), are worth the trip to Pleasant Hill.
