Dual Threats: Under The Radar Standouts Pt. 2
As stated in the previous installment of “Dual Threats”, it’s noted that every team needs a guy that can get the job done nightly on both sides of the ball. Check out these dual threat standouts who have and will continue proving their worth at the high school level.
Dewan Lesane – Clinton High School – Class of 2018 – 6’3” 170 SG
Electric. Lesane is a long electric athlete that plays above the rim offensively and creates havoc defensively. He averaged around 8 rebounds per game from the guard spot as a junior using his energy, length and timing to control the glass. He does a great job staying in front of his man and in time could develop into a high level defender at the college level. On the offensive side of the ball, his first step and crafty ability to get to the rim going to his left will open the door for him to develop into a really good slasher.
Kenny Dye – Northside High School (Jacksonville) Class of 2018 – 6’1” 165 PG
The term true point guard is the first thing that comes to mind when you watch Kenny Dye play basketball. He doesn’t make many (if any) mistakes on either side of the ball. Defensively, he’s much stronger than he originally looks. Bodies up with ball-handlers, taking away their comfort zone while dribbling and dictates where he wants them to go. Very smart defender. On the offensive side, he’s extremely patient. Never gets sped up. Can shoot the ball, run the offense, score and make the correct pass at a high rate. Could become an excellent college point guard sooner than later after graduation.
DaMar Sutton – Northeastern High School – Class of 2018 – 6’4” 180 W
This kid (pictured above) has been productive on both sides of the ball since his freshman season. A truly underrated player in every sense of the word. On defense, he does a great job talking, boxing out and slowing down pick and roll plays. Excellent rebounder for his size as well. Can really dominate the glass with his combination of leaping ability and quickness. He’s a load to handle in face-up situations. Has a good pump fake action he uses to get defenders to commit. Steps into his mid-range pull-up with great confidence and will dunk on you in a heartbeat. A huge senior season is bound to be in the works.
Joshua Burden – Bertie High School – Class of 2020 – 6’2’ 180 SG
Only a rising sophomore. Despite Burden not necessarily putting up big numbers as a freshman, he showed enough towards the end of the season and over the summer to show signs of a future two way player. He absolutely never gives up on plays. Sprints back on defense at full speed getting steals and blocking shots that appear to be clear layups. Crashes the glass hard and always displays a high motor. With the ball, he’s a bull, he loves absorbing contact to on his way to the rim. As he continues to gain experience on both sides on the ball, his size, motor and skill show great signs of a tough future two way player at the high school level.
