Recruiting Report: Sam Olson (2018)
Comets Little enjoyed its share of success during the grassroots season. Sam Olson was one of the main reasons why.
Olson, a 6-foot-2 guard from Rocori, was one of the top players for Comets Little, using his shooting ability, defensive tenacity and basketball smarts to make an impact on a regular basis throughout the summer.
“I think it went pretty well,” Olson said of the season. “Our team won 20 games or something like that. So we did alright. Playing against a lot of good teams every weekend. It’s helpful for my game. It’s a lot different than school ball where you might be playing against guys that aren’t on your skill level all the time. Every weekend in AAU you are matched up with someone as big as you or more talented than you and it pushes you. So it helped me a ton.”
Olson was a starter for a solid Rocori team a year ago, where his long-range shooting ability was put to good use playing off the ball around guys like Derek Thompson and Connor Schoborg and his ability to play with and without the ball was valuable in the flow of Rocori’s regimented flex offense. That discipline allowed him to excel with Comets Little, where the focus was ball and player movement as well.
“My strength is my shooting,” said Olson. “That’s my go-to. I’m looking to shoot the ball. I think I need to improve on my ball handling a little more.”
Olson’s drawn interest from a number of MIAC schools.
“Hamline’s been talking to me at a number of tournaments,” said Olson. “St. Johns, Concordia Moorhead, some of those schools have also been in contact with me too.”
