Recruiting Report: Omari Peek (2018)
“My goal was to get offers and to get better. That’s basically all I’m trying to do this entire July and for the rest of my high school year,” Omari Peek (2018) said today when Prep Hoops caught up with him.
After one weekend of the July Live Period, the 6’6” wing from Strongsville High School can check those two boxes. Yesterday, Peek received his first Division I offer from the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, coming just one day after another offer from Central State.
Playing with Club Ohio (Pierce), this past weekend in Indianapolis was the first time both schools watched Peek in person.
“[Maryland Eastern Shore] just told me that they think I’d be a great fit for their team and they’d love to have me,” Peek said.
He later addressed Central State by saying, “That’s a team that this was their first time seeing me also.”
This coming weekend, Peek has been told by Tulsa and Youngstown State that they will watch him in Louisville at the All In Hoopfest.
Youngstown State’s new staff, headed by Cleveland native Jerrod Calhoun, welcomed Peek in for an unofficial visit just a week back. It was Peek’s only visit this summer.
“I’ve been on a visit to Youngstown State, that was the only one. It was an unofficial visit about a week ago,” Peek said.
“I’d like to visit [Maryland Eastern Shore and Central State], but I’m not sure if I’ll be able to,” Peek told us, when asked if he plans on taking visits to the two programs who have offered him.
Peek plans on letting his senior season play out in its entirety before making a college decision.
“I’d like to wait until the end of my senior year so I have time think about the best decision for my future. Because, you know, it’s not like I got the offers my sophomore or freshman year. So I got to take time to think about it.”
When the day comes, Peek will be looking for a school that offers a computer science or engineering major. He told us that he currently carries a 3.5 GPA and a 21 ACT, and is awaiting paperwork on his transcripts, because he transferred from Walnut Hills after his sophomore year.
In the time between now and then, expect Peek to continue drawing interest and offers because of his playmaking ability. Peek’s athleticism, skill, and size allow him to play multiple roles within an offense — he scores from all three levels.
While he comes off the ball for Club Ohio, playing alongside D-I/D-II point guard prospect Kameron Gibson, he shows ability as a primary ball-handler in the high school season. Also, Peek told us that he’s focused on improving his foot-speed and hips right now.
