Recruiting Report: Kyle Owens (2019)
Crespi high school small forward Kyle Owens just keeps stretching out.
Whether it’s his height — which is now a legitimate 6-feet-7 — his rangy wingspan or his perimeter jump shooting touch, the class of 2019 prospect remains one of the highest potential players in Southern California.
Owens, whose father, Keith, played at UCLA in the late 1980’s and early 1990’s, has an intriguing inside-out skill set complete with fundamental post footwork, an impressive mid-range game and the ability to stroke the catch-and-shoot 3-pointer.
2019 small forward Kyle Owens is not stressing a list of offers, letting his game do the talking. And as he keeps growing physically, Owens is continuing to learn how to use is ever-growing size and length on the hardwood.
“I’m using my length to get into passing lanes and rebound,” he told Prep Hoops SoCal at the Fullcourt Press Cream of the Crop. “I need to get stronger, work on my ball handling and scoring at all three levels.”
Owens recently made the switch from playing club with Earl Watson Elite to Hometown Favorites, coached by highly-respected and newly-minted Culver City high school coach Reggie Morris, Jr..
When asked to grade his performance on the week, the rising junior was satisfied with his offense, but knows he has things to work on.
“I think I’m playing pretty good, but you can always do better,” Owens said of his live period performance. “I think my offense is flowing pretty well, but you can always do better on the defensive end.”
Plenty of schools have taken notice of Owens’ combination of size, skill and upside with his first offer coming from UC Santa Barbara in the early part of April.
He’s also garnering interest from Stanford, Colorado, West Virginia, Hawaii, Rice, Grand Canyon, Liberty and Drexel.
Owens said he’s not worried about racking up offers, but is rather staying in the gym and working to keep advancing his game.
“I’m just trying to be patient with it and let it come to me,” he said. “I’m just focusing on getting better.”
