Williams on the rise in So-Cal
Gahr High School, located in Cerritos, California, produced a late blooming point guard by the name of Caspar Ware. Ware would go on to lead Long Beach State to the NCAA Tournament and be named Big West Player of the year. Well there appears to be another sleeper emerging on the horizon in 6-4 Gary Williams.
Williams, whose father (Gary) and uncle (Curtis) played on those talented Dominguez (Compton) teams in the 1980s that included current Long Beach State assistant coach Rod Palmer as well as former Los Angeles Laker standout Cedric Ceballos.
Thus it comes as no surprise that that those basketball genes would kick in sooner or later as Gary Williams has the physical tools to be a Division 1 player in the near future. He possesses that prototypical 2-guard frame with long arms and it doesn’t take much effort to crank down a rim-rattling dunk.
In order for Williams to garner more college interest and bag one of those highly coveted scholarship offers, there are areas of his game that need attention.
“Since the regular season ended I’ve been polishing my ball handling and tightening up my jump shot.” While monitoring his progress this summer in the St. John Bosco Summer League, Williams has nailed a number of jump shots showing great lift and a smooth release. However, his ball handling against ball pressure can get sloppy at times and his motor fluctuates, especially on the defensive end.
Although it’s early in the process Williams has heard from a variety of schools that intend to evaluate him during the NCAA evaluation period in July.
“I’ve heard from USC, UC Santa Barbara, Pacific, Wyoming, San Jose State, Grand Canyon, and Boise State.
Considering Williams doesn’t turn 17 until the fall, look for that list to increase, starting in July when he suits up for one of the top club teams in the country in Earl Watson Elite.
