Recruiting Report: Fred Cleveland (2019)
I recently had the opportunity to speak with former Urban Prep-Englewood point guard Fred Cleveland Jr. who has now decided to enroll at Chicago Leo High School for his junior season. Fred took some time to let me know about his recruitment, AAU and what his goals are for the upcoming season.
Coming off a sophomore season with Urban Prep where he put up averages of 15 points and 5 assist Fred is looking for a big summer to help bolster his college offers. During the spring evaluation period when the above picture was taking he was playing on the Mac Irvin Fire. As this story goes to press Fred informed me he is looking into some other AAU opportunities and should have a decision in place as the July period is starting to pick up.
I asked Fred directly what he is hoping his play gets across to the scouts and coaches this summer going into the season “To show that I can run a tram, be effective on both sides of the basketball. Also shoe my competitive drive and heart on the court and be a leader from the point guard spot.”
“I see my name and where I’m ranked and I want to change that number so this is a very big summer for me to prove my place as one of the best players in the state.”
His recruitment is at a standstill right now with just letters and calls from some programs he said UNLV and Western Illinois have been in contact and he hopes to take an unofficial visit to UNLV before the summer ends then start setting up official visits. If he can show the growth and improvement in his game that he displayed during the spring evaluation period his stock could start to rise.
He was ranked as the 84th player in our most recent rankings and feels he can only go up from here. This is a player I will revisit as he gets ready to take the floor with his new Leo ball club and have the opportunity to watch for the rest of the AAU session this summer to see what improvements he has made to his game on the floor and what will be next for him.
