Prospect Spotlight: Dante Wheeler (2020)
Dante Wheeler (2020) has had a busy offseason. When he is not playing ball, he has been in the gym, working out and getting stronger. He showed off this physicality at the NOE Showcase last weekend. A less known name at the moment, Dante has the skillset that will make several coaches interested as he continues to develop.
Wheeler demonstrates great court vision, which is rare for a forward. When it comes to playing in the paint, Dante definitely performs like a forward and does it in a dominating fashion. A strong rebounder, Dante can go grab boards with ease and blocks shots at a high rate. When one looks at his offensive game, you see the same physicality as he makes smart plays with the ball and finishes well in traffic. The one area where Dante can improve is his on-the-ball defense and develop a quicker side step.
Because of his guard like abilities and his forward abilities, Dante is difficult to categorize in one specific position. For now, he plays more like small forward/wing but if he continues to develop and improves that on ball defense, he could be a 2 guard as well as a small forward. One of Dante’s other goals besides continuing to improve as a player is to pick up his first offer. Currently, he owns no offers yet, but will likely begin to receive interest as more schools see his combo abilities.
