Prospect Spotlight: Corey Sawyer (2020)
Master’s Academy rising sophomore Corey Sawyer is another guy who knows no limit when it comes to scoring. He can get a bucket, at will.
At the Raptors Elite ID4 Invitational, Sawyer was able to create his own shot and deliver from three when called upon. His handles are great, in-transition. If he’s driving to the cup from the baseline, he’s effective at finishing strong. Sawyer saw this tourney as an opportunity to grow in a lot of different areas—even when it came to sharing the rock.
“I just wanted to make a name for myself and try to become a better teammate. I wanted to get my guys into open spots and get a W,” Sawyer said.
Being the son of the Raptors Sawyer AAU team’s coach, Corey takes it personal whenever he has a bad game. This is why he aims to be effective in many areas every time they take the floor. He admits that he sometimes gets mad at himself if he doesn’t play well, but Sawyer aims to turn that into positive leadership energy.
“Since I am his son, I take the L’s and put them on me because I should be the biggest leader on the floor,” Saywer said.
From now until November, Corey’s biggest goals are getting in the weight room to become stronger. He wants to be able to absorb contact better and finish at the rim even better than he already does. The mentality is already there. Now for Sawyer, it’s about execution.
