Prospect Spotlight: Beon Riley (2020)
These days, finding age-appropriate high-level basketball prospects is not an easy task.
Beon Riley, a 15-year-old rising sophomore from Chula Vista Mater Dei Catholic High School, is one of them.
The 6-4 combo guard had a strong week at the Double Pump Best of Summer Tournament. Built like a strong safety, Riley can score at will off the dribble and showed improved shooting touch from mid-range.
Riley also has improved ball skills, creating for his Cali Boost teammates off the dribble and in transition.
“I’ve been working on everything,” Riley said. “Every part of my game needs improvement.”
Riley averaged 15.4 points and 5.7 rebounds per game as a freshman, while also contributing more than 2 assists and 2 steals per game. He helped lead the Crusaders to a CIF Open Division appearance and an upset victory over Bellarmine Prep in the Under Armour Holiday Classic.
Riley has been playing through pain caused by Osgood-Schlatter Disease for most of the spring and summer. The knee pain limited him during the spring live periods, but he showed no signs of it during a 50-point victory over the Houston Topguns.
“It still is bothering me, but I’m trying not to focus on it and just trying to be there for my team,” he said.
Cali Boost coach Steve Wade said that Riley has received interest from a number of high major programs. Wade sees Riley as one of the premier combo guards on the West Coast for his class.
“I think the sky is the limit for Beon,” he said.
