Prospect profile: Brent Darby Jr. (2020)
Add Brent Darby (2020) to list of college hoop prospects that will be on display this winter when Garfield Heights takes the floor.
Darby, a 6’6″ forward, projects out to be a “stretch 4” as he the ability to step outside and hit a jump shot, while also being able to provide an inside presence with an ability to rebound and defend on the interior.
“I think I’m more of an inside scorer, but I can hit from the outside,” said Darby, whose father is the late Brent Darby, who played collegiately at Ohio State.
“I want to play college basketball and I see myself going to a high D-1 college,” said Darby, who has no college offers, but has received a letter from OSU.
As a sophomore on a team which will feature a starting front line of players who have all received Division I offers, Darby knows he’ll have to contribute where he can, which will come at the defensive end and in the paint where he’ll be expected to rebound.
“I’ll score when I need to,” said Darby.
“He’s got a huge upside,” Garfield Heights coach Sonny Johnson said of Darby. “He’s an inside guy who can shoot. he’s a legitimate stretch 4. He’s a great rebounder and has a good body.”
Johnson indicated moving up to the varsity level will challenge Darby and provide a gauge for just how good a player he can be. Darby averaged 15 points a game while playing junior varsity as a freshman a season ago, said Johnson. Darby scored 8 points in July 24 overtime playoff win for Garfield Heights over defending Division IV state champion, Lutheran East.
