NY2LA Summer Jam: Derrick’s Dimes Sunday Standouts
Mequon, Wi – Sunday was the final day of the NY2LA Summer Jam event. It was another great day of play with some highly competitive games. I take a look at some of the standouts from Championship Sunday here in NY2LA Summer Jam: Derrick’s Dimes Sunday Standouts!
SF – 6’10’’ Simi Shittu – CIA Bounce (2018)
The Small Forward out of Canada is one of the top Small Forwards in the nation and he showed why Sunday with an all-around performance in a game versus Dreamvision. Simi Shittu was most efficient when running the point-forward for CIA Bounce where he could use his size, vision and handle to make plays for himself at the rim and also distribute to teammates. Shittu had a string of plays where he threw down three dunks and also dished out three assists. He showed good handles and lateral quickness and seems comfortable on the swing. In the first game, I scouted he played more in the post, he is capable of playing inside or out, but if he is not getting touches in the paint he doesn’t affect the game like he does playing more of a wing, where he can control more of the action. Elite level prospect with offers from UConn, Oregon, Syracuse amoung offer and interest is starting to come in from some blueblood schools during the live period.
PF – 6’8’’ Joe Reese – Ramey Jets (2018)
Vashon (Mo) Forward Joe Reese is a prospect who when his motor is running can be an effective player but has shown flashes where he can disappear. However, Reese had a good performance against CIA Bounce EYBL. Reese is a long lengthy forward who can makes plays out in transition, shoots it well from the 15- feet and can protect of rim. Reese started out hot in the game scoring around the rim and getting to the line. In the second half, he stepped out and hit some mid-range shots where he showed a shot touch. Reese has 17 points on the game. If he can play more consistent and bring the type of energy more often he can be a player who coaches really stay to take notice off because he certainly has potential, and a high ceiling just needs tap into it on a consistent basis.
SG – 6’4’’ Ryan Kutsor – Kessel Heat (2018)
Kutsor had 18 points in a win for Kessel Heat. He started the game off knocking down two three’s and then started to get into the lane as well as work the mid-range area. Not just a shooter he can score off the bounce and get to the rim. Had some impressive pull up jumpers and floaters in the lane. Kutsor also rebounded well from the guard spot. Kutsor is a tough player who competes and makes smart basketball plays.
PF – 6’9’’ Brandon John – CIA Bounce (2018)
Brandon John, another Canadian prospect impressed Sunday. He poured in 21 points in a win over Ramey-Jets 17U. He is a big athletic post player who does most of his work in the paint and loves to work the baseline. Showed a soft touch around the basket and can finish with authority. Gets good position in the paint and has solid footwork on his post moves. Needs to get stronger to be able to bang down low in the post but a strength program should help him develop. John currently has 6 D1 offers, but look for that number to increase after a good showing at NY2LA Summer Jam with mid-majors likely to get involved.
SG – 6’6’’ Matt Mitchell – Dreamvision (2017)
The shooting guard out of Riverside, CA had a good game coming off the bench for DreamVision scoring a game high 23 points in a win over CIA Bounce EYBL. He has a strong build and can get into the lane and finish through contact. A hard-noised player who is a physical wing. The one-time Cal-Fullerton commit has opened up his recruitment recently and is a 2017 qualifier. More than just a guy who can get to the rim, Mitchell showed he can knock down shots from out the perimeter, and defend at a high level with consistency.
