Louisiana Best Pure Point Guards (2018)
Javonte Smart 6’4 Scotlandville
You might not think that a guy that averages 25 for his high school team would be considered a pure point guard, but that is one of the things that makes Javonte truly special. There isn’t much on the basketball court that he isn’t capable of doing, and he is going to be tasked with leading the show at the highest level at LSU in a couple years.
Greg Williams 6’3 LCA
Up until this past year, Greg’s biggest knock on his game was that he passed too much, and there are still some that say that he is too unselfish. However, he is is now getting to the point where he is both a scorer and a passer, and he is going to be able to play either guard position at the next level.
Jared Butler 6’3 Riverside
If you watched Riverside play last season, Jared Butler had the ball in his hand a lot, and he is very adept at both scoring and passing. When he is driving to the hoop, he is looking to hit cutters, and that has come in handy on the EYBL Circuit, as he is averaging over 5 assists per game.
Jonathan Cisse 6’2 STM
Cisse is another player that has the ball in his hand a lot, and despite doing a ton of scoring, is also looking to get other players involved, especially on the AAU circuit. In the spring, for New Orleans Basketball Club, he averaged over 8 assists per game, and did a great job of finding guys in the half-court.
Brian White 5’10 Natchitoches Central
Next year, for the first time in his career, Brian White isn’t going to have to share ball-handling responsibilities with Brandon Rachal, and I’m looking forward to seeing how he adjusts. I expect that both his scoring and assists will go up, but the jury is still out on if they will be able to replicate the success that NCHS has had over his career.
Eli Mouton 5’8 Ascension
Playing at a small school, the bulk of the scoring responsibility falls on Eli’s shoulders, especially next season. But he has shown what he is capable of as a lead guard, playing the last two seasons with Louisiana Select Team Milsap, where he has played very well for them. He is going to be a steal for any college team that offers him.
Ben Pruett 5’10 Grace Christian
Ben is another very talented lead guard that doesn’t get the recognition that he should, just because he plays for a small school. But he has done a great job leading them, and is a part of a three headed monster class that is going to be seniors next year, and he is very good at setting his teammates up in areas they will be most successful.
