KC: Wednesday Standouts
PrepHoopsIllinois will spend the final week of the July evaluation period in Kansas City. We started things off on Wednesday night with the Jayhawk Finale. Here are the prospects that caught our eye!
SF Lamontay Daughtery (Brad Beal Elite 15U)
We began our eventing with BBE 15U which is led by the state of Illinois’ #3 2020 prospect. This Duquoin small forward has a great frame at 6’5” with length and a ton of upside. He has always flashed the potential, but never fully put a complete game together. We came away from his opening game at the Jayhawk impressed with his improved motor and consistency. Seemed much more engaged than we had seen in the past. His athleticism shined through. He handles it tremendously well in the open floor and has the ability to grab defensive rebounds, go end to end, and finish at the cup. Also mixes in some strong attacks off the bounce and especially likes to use the baseline. Rebounded at a nice clip snatching them in traffic. He had 11 points and 8 rebounds. High-major potential.
PF Devion Harris (Brad Beal Elite 15U)
This was my first look at this 6’5” Parkway Central (MO) power forward. Came away liking his upside a lot. First of all he should grow a few more inches with his frame. Projectable athlete that is still growing into his body. Flashed quite a bit of skill on the block scoring in the paint on hook shots, slammed some dump off passes, and even hit a mid-range jumper. Active kid that plays with a good motor.
PF Josh Wallace (Brad Beal Elite 16U)
Best we have seen this 6’5” power forward from CBC play. He is a high energy four man that plays with a relentless motor. Big time second jump which allows him to get on the offensive glass for second chance points. Runs the floor extremely well as he scores a lot of his points by grabbing passes like a wide receiver and then finishing. Converted through contact at the rim throughout. The bouncy four man had the biggest bucket of the game as he got a tip back dunk to win it. Needs to work on free throws and overall skill level to max out ability, but is definitely a guy that needs to be on the LM/MM radars for programs in 2019.
PG Caleb Love (Brad Beal Elite 16U)
On a team full of quality point guards it was the CBC 2020 prospect playing up that stood out for BBE. Projectable lead guard with smooth handles. Excellent in transition and can get to the rim where he finishes with acrobatics. Plus shooter off the catch. Feel for the game at a young age and plays with a lot of confidence. D1 prospect.
PG DJ Carton (Quad City Elite 16U)
Carton was about as awesome as a lead guard could be in the first half of his game against BBE. The Bettendorf (IA) 2019 point guard landed a ton of high-major scholarships this past week and continued his strong July. In the first half he completely took BBE apart with his speed, handles, passing, and scoring. Got others involved by drawing defenders and finding guys. As a scorer he drilled multiple threes and even had an alley-oop and-1. He had 20 points at the half. Unfortunately he finished with that as he struggled with cramps and then the referees fouled him out on some horrible calls. Carton showed he needs to be in consideration for a top 100 ranking nationally.
SG Jamir Price (Quad City Elite 16U)
Best we have seen this Rock Island shooting guard play. A lot of times he coasts during games. He was in attack mode throughout as he had a few nice straight line drives to the rim. Also had a bucket on a back cut as well as a put back. The 2019 wing made a few impressive passes inside. Finished with 10 points.
PG Cole Anthony (PSA Cardinals 17U)
Anthony is the premier point guard in the country in 2019. Against QCE he showed exactly why! The explosive lead guard started it off with a barrage of scores on threes, drives, and got literally anywhere he wanted on the floor. Tremendous speed taking it to the basket and is a big time perimeter shooter as well. That is a pretty lethal combination. Also gets after it on the defensive end fighting through screens and using his quick hands to get deflections and steals. Elite high-major player.
SG Corvon Seales (Quad City Elite 17U)
Seales has seen his stock explode over the last month landing multiple D2 and LM offers. He was scorching hot to start as the North Scott (IA) wing drilled five triples in the first half. He has a smooth shot that is free and easy coming off his hands. Struggled in the second half with PSA’s length and 2-3 zone to get the same type of production. He had 15 points.
G Sean Houpt (Illinois Irish 16U)
Special mention for this Danville 2019 combo guard. We are big fans of the lefty. He led his team to a monster program win over a PSA team that has multiple high-major players. They were playing on the court next to us so we didn’t get to extensively evaluate the game, but he was drilling shots and playing his hard-nosed D for one of the most complete team in the state. Houpt went for 22 points.
