July Sleepers Watch: Step Out Bigs (2018)
With the live periods right around the corner, we at Vantage Hoops will be previewing under the radar guys to keep a watch on across the state. Today, we will look at some of the best slept on step out bigs in the state who should see their recruitment pick up with a good July.
- Nate Spurlock | 6’7” | District Basketball Club
Spurlock is a high motor big man with a tremendous perimeter skill set. He can shoot the trail three and knock it down off the pick-and-pop, rebounds well and is surprisingly strong despite his slight frame. He can face up and put it on the floor in limited dribbles, can score with both hands around the basket and is a good passer as well.
- Brody McDevitt | 6’4” | Hard 2 Guard
The Poquoson big man isn’t very well known, but his unique skill set allows him to play multiple positions and create mismatches all over the floor. He can handle in transition, shoot the three ball and score from all three levels. He’s stuck between positions, but he’s a crafty post finisher that can step out and stretch the defense when needed.
- Gus Wise | 6’6” | EG Premiere
The prototypical step out four man, Wise can really stroke it from deep. He has good form, good footwork and his length allows him to get shots up over smaller defenders and he doesn’t need a lot of space to get his shot off. He isn’t much of an inside presence, but he stretches the floor and forces teams to prepare for him because they have to have a big man who can guard him on the perimeter.
- Nate Waddy | 6’4” | Higher Level
Waddy is a little undersized, but he has an inside-out game that makes him able to play and guard multiple positions. He can stroke it from deep, finishes with both hands around the basket and is great in four-out sets.
- Christian Chappell | 6’9” | Richmond Squires
Chappell is a load at 6’9” and upwards of 300 pounds, making him a big space filler in the paint. However, he isn’t just a load inside, as he’s able to take other bigs away from the basket with his ability to shoot it from deep. He doesn’t get up and down as well as some bigs, but he can hit the trail 3, and if you insert a smaller big in to guard him on the perimeter he’s going to be able to muscle his way to easy baskets in the paint.
- Shawn Saunders | 6’4” | Team Loaded 757
An undersized big man with a high motor, Saunders is a versatile scorer who thrives with his ability to step outside and knock down shots. He’s a good rebounder, can stretch the floor and is the perfect fit for a four out system with his ability to make shots from all over the floor. He’s super productive when he’s making shots, and you don’t have to run many plays for him to get it done.
