2018 Rankings Breakdown: Most Versatile
Versatility and/or multi-positional players are trending at a high-level in today’s game. Prospects that can play multiple positions and defend anywhere on the court are held at a high premium.
Navigating the landscape of Southern California brought us to this group of players that impact the game in a variety of ways.
Top Five: Most Versatile
5. Fletcher Tynen (Bishop Montgomery/LA Rockfish)
Arguably the the best “glue-type” in Southern California. Defends at a high level and has a nose for the ball. Offensive game has evolved this summer as well.
4. Cameron Shelton (Damien/Earl Watson Elite)
This stat-stuffer will suffocate opposing guards, rebound at a high level, slash his way to the rim, and drop off some nifty dimes. Straight winner right here.
Are point guard duties the future for Doutrive?3. Devonaire Doutrive (Birmingham/California Supreme)
His jump shot needs polishing, but this future point guard is a gifted passer and finisher and he has the length and athleticism to be a versatile lock-down defender.
2. De’Sean Allen-Eikens (Santa Monica/Earl Watson Elite)
Blue-collar comes immediately to mind when describing the 6-foot-6 Allen-Eikens. The burly 4-man is a horse in the paint area, competes at a high-level, and can impact the game with his motor, rebounding, and finishing.
1. Marvin Bagley III (Sierra Canyon/Nike Phamily)
What makes Bagley III the No. 1 player in the country is his versatility. The ultra-skilled lefty can score in a variety of ways in the paint area, operate from the elbow, and is an astute passer.
On the Cusp
* Harrison Butler (Mater Dei/Compton Magic)
Butler has a hot motor at both ends of the floor and he has the skill set to play inside and out in the Big West, Big Sky, etc.
* Jordan Starr (Santa Clarita Christian/Compton Magic)
There are not too many players in So-Cal who have the IQ/savvy of Starr. This rangy lefty has terrific court vision and is improving his scoring skill set.
* Kirk Smith (Fairfax/The Truth)
This slender 6-foot-6 combo-forward needs to continue to hone his perimeter skills, but he’s long and active on the inside and shows range on his jump shot.
* Wes Slajchert (Oak Park/Earl Watson Elite)
The quintessential glue-type right here…”Basketball Player”
* Payton Moore (Santa Monica/Splash City)
Moore has a relentless energy and as a result affects the game in a variety of ways (passing, rebounding, defense, and explosive finishes)
