10 Best: Team CP3 vs. Team Melo
LAS VEGAS, NV — Team CP3 defeated Team Melo 89-47 at The Ei8ht presented by Bigfoot Hoops. Dozens of division one coaches packed the gym to witness this contest. Here are the 10 best.
MVP | ’18 COBY WHITE | TEAM CP3
UNC commit Coby White played a big role on both ends of the floor for Team CP3, who led this game wire to wire. The athletic and skilled lead guard pumped in 14 of his 16 points in the first half, and did a nice job defensively while hitting the boards as well.
BEST OFFENSIVE PERFORMANCE | JACK HEMPHILL | TEAM CP3
Jack Hemphill built off his strong run of play last week with a very strong second half for Team CP3. The 6’9 230 pound big man was held scoreless in the first half, but dominated the second. Hemphill scored all 19 of his points in the second half, and showed he could step out and knock down the three ball while also finishing efficiently inside.
BEST DEFENSIVE PERFORMANCE | JOHN NEWMAN III | TEAM CP3
Clemson commit John Newman did a very nice job defensively for Team CP3. Not only did he defend well on the perimeter, but he also made his presence felt on the defensive glass. All of Team CP3’s guards did a nice job in that area, but none better than Newman.
BEST GUY OFF THE BENCH | ELIJAH MCADDEN | TEAM CP3
Elijah McAdden provided a vital spark off the bench in the first half, where he scored 7 quick points. The energetic and long limbed wing worked well without the ball, and made smart decisions while in possession. McAdden finished the game with 12 points.
BEST UNDER THE RADAR PERFORMANCE | ANTHONY HIGGS | TEAM MELO
Despite his team being down big most of the game, Anthony Higgs didn’t stop fighting. As usual, he worked hard to help his team gain ground on the boards. Higgs hit some jumpers, and finished well around the basket. Higgs led Team Melo with 15 points.
BEST REBOUNDER | JACK HEMPHILL | TEAM CP3
As noted earlier, Hemphill played very well for Team CP3, but his impact was also felt on the boards. He did a nice job boxing out the low block with his wide frame, and showed a high motor on the offensive boards. A lot of his points came off easy tip ins and put backs.
BEST SHOOTER | NOAH LOCKE | TEAM MELO
He didn’t get too much room to operate, but Noah Locke still found a way to make it work. As usual, he moved extremely well without the ball and found creases in the CP3 defense to operate. Locke scored 10 points while managing to hit two threes, but was kept in check for most of the game.
BEST PASSER | LEAKY BLACK | TEAM CP3
At his size, Leaky Black possesses excellent ball skills to go along with a very good feel for the game. The 6’8 point guard is extremely unselfish, and knows how to set up his teammates with accurate, timely passes. UNC is getting a versatile floor general who also isn’t afraid to do the dirty work.
BEST INTANGIBLES | COBY WHITE | TEAM CP3
One thing that stood out about White was how vocal he is, especially on defense. He is always alert off the ball, and communicating to his teammates. White was the loudest voice on the floor for Team CP3.
BEST STORY TO WATCH MOVING FORWARD
Can Team CP3 repeat as champions of this tournament? They were able to do it last year, and seem to have a very good group this year. It will certainly be an interesting test as they will face the winner of MOKAN and Oakland Soldiers in the second round.
