Urbandale Shootout: Sunday Recaps
10:00: Dowling 73 vs Des Moines North 59
The Maroons lost a lot of talent from last season’s formidable 16-6 squad, and are still trying to figure out what the new group might look like. But they know one thing for sure: 6’4 senior-to-be Sam Ingoli will be one of the most dominant players in Iowa next season. His prowess was on full display in this win over the Polar Bears, Ingoli muscled his was to 20 second half points, and nearly single-handedly willed his team to the hard-fought win. The Polar Bears took a short-lived lead early in the second half, when 2018 shooting guard Jahion McCaleb notched three straight 3s. But foul trouble was detrimental for North, and all five starters fouled out — point guard Tyreke Locure fouled out very early in the second half — allowing for Dowling to pull-away relatively easily late.
11:15 Semifinal : Waukee 66 vs Dallas Center-Grimes 41
This was a blowout from start to finish, and the Warriors were able to get its bench players plenty of action late after taking a 47-19 lead into the break. A new Waukee shooting guard has emerged as a standout, Jaxx Rittman started red-hot in the win, and notched a game-high 20 points — 14 of them in the first half. His talents are added to what can be considered a big three of Noah Hart, Dylan Jones and Nathan Johnson — those three combined for 35 points in the blowout win. DC-G guard Steve Borneman is clearly the leader for the Mustangs and he played well — particularly in the second half — notching a team-high 18 points. Senior-to-be Justin Protzman broke free for a nice transition jam, sparking the Mustangs a bit in the second half, and showing glimpses of what could be this winter in Grimes.
12:30 Semifinal: Valley 74 vs Xavier 70 (OT)
What a thrilling game this became, with Valley’s Luke Sueppel and Xavier’s Matt Mims showing off their clutch genes late, each doing their part to send the semifinal match to overtime. Xavier’s Jackson Joens sank two free-throws late to give the Saints a two point lead, and then with 20 seconds left, Sueppel — assisted by Trayvon Williams — canned a corner 3 to put the Tigers up one. Mims wasted no time in getting to the rack where he was fouled, and knocked-down both free-throws to tie the game. Valley could not get a clean look in the final several seconds, and the game went to OT. That’s when senior-to-be Carter Frey hit a clutch 3-ball of his own, the only field-goal of the extra frame (he would add a free-throw later), and Valley escaped with the four point win. The Tigers advanced to the final despite Mims and Joens combining for 52 points — those two make up one of the best duos in Iowa. Blake Brinkmeyer was again impressive for Valley, slamming home three dunks and pacing the team with 13 points.
5:30 Championship: Waukee 48 vs Valley 47 (2 OT)
Waukee 2018 Jaxx Rittman only scored two points in the Warriors final win over rival Valley, but no single point was bigger than his sudden death free-throw to win the game. These two teams were about as evenly matched as you could get, and the largest lead for either was just four points. That lead came after a banked-in — and he called bank — 3 by Valley’s Michael Bryant went in at the 5:30 mark of the second half. Waukee countered though with back-to-back triples from Nathan Johnson and Nathan Nelson, and took a two point lead of there own. A series of tough buckets and big plays ensued — which one would expect in a title game — and what we ended up with was an overtime championship. Luke Sueppel started the two minute OT with a tough 14-footer, and Noah Hart tied it again with a tougher reverse lay-in. Double OT was sudden death, and Ritmann — after a Dylan Jones won tip — wasted no time getting into the lane and drawing a foul (video below), he calmly hit the first of two free-throws, and ended the intense and compelling June match. For Valley, it was Bryant who led the charge, he was sensational while notching a game-high 22 points. Waukee was led by Nathan Nelson’s 15. It should be noted that Valley played without standout 2019 Trayvon Williams, he had been the most dynamic player at the Shootout through the semifinals.
