Recruiting Report: Will Alcock (2018)
Will Alcock – 6’7” | W/F | Zionsville High School
Will Alcock is a well-rounded prospect in the Class of 2018. He has a skill set that fits into both a guard and forward position. Alcock plays his AAU ball with Grand Park Premier on the Powerade Platform and his high school ball with Zionsville.
Will is an adaptable player who does what it takes for his team to be successful. He has taken on many different roles with his teams that require him to have a diverse skill set.
When asked about the spring session with Grand Park Premier, Alcock was relatively pleased with how it went. “It’s been going really well. As a team, we’re above .500 in the Powerade Platform and individually I’ve had the opportunity to play in much more of a scoring and ball handling role.”
“I’ve always trained to be a really flexible position player but there past two years of varsity basketball I’ve really had to play inside.”
Will is more comfortable facing the basket and can take advantages of mismatches on the floor because of his size and ball handling ability. “Facing the basket, I feel like I can do anything that I want.”
With moving out to the wing, Alcock has seen his scoring increase and that will be something that he will roll over into high school season where he will need to be a compliment scorer to Isaiah Thompson.
With the month of June coming to a close, players have had the opportunity to play with their high school team and focus more on individual development before July hits.
“My primary focus is aggressiveness, that’s something Coach Busick and I sat down and talked about. My flexibility is a weakness so I’ve started a calisthenics program with a trainer, really just so I can be more explosive and jump higher.”
Alcock’s lateral quickness and foot speed is already showing improvement through April and May. If he can continue to put the work in on his athleticism, he will become a diverse and versatile scorer that will be hard for opposition to manage next season.
Zionsville as a team is coming off a strong season but recently graduated three of their key guys. “As a team, our main focus is getting bigger and stronger. Last summer we had a transition to a new strength coach so now that he’s settled, it’s been really productive.”
Alcock continued with mentioning that the intensity and effectiveness of workouts have been much better this year and that it’s getting everyone excited for the upcoming season. Zionsville is off to Purdue on Thursday for team camp but they will be missing their starting backcourt in Thompson and Bertram. “It’ll be good to have an inexperienced backcourt and see who steps up.”
When it comes to recruiting and playing at the next level, Will is looking at a multitude of options that he could pursue.
He’s been in contact with Depauw University, Wabash College, Franklin College, Anderson University, and Bethel College. “Coach Brummit and Sullivan came to an open gym two weeks ago and I plan on visiting there in the fall. Coach Bozzelli has watched me play a couple times and I’ll visit there in the fall as well.”
Will is also interested in testing the waters on being a potential walk on player. He has a recent cousin who played a few years at Bellarmine before transferring to Indiana University as a walk-on so that has always been a source of interest.
Coming off a junior season in which he was named a team captain and did the little things to help his team win, Alcock is looking to expand his game and be a big-time contributor as a senior. “I feel like my best attribute is my defensive and rebounding presence.”
Look for Alcock to be more than just a rebounder and defender for the Eagles this season. Intriguing wing prospect that is working to expand his game. Keep him on the radar this season.
