Recruiting Report: Wambde Diaz (2018)
Cedar Mountain/Comfrey made something of a statement by winning the Class A State Breakdown tournament Sunday. A driving force in that effort was point guard Wambde Diaz.
The 6-foot-2 floor general is the quintessential playmaker and his ability to stuff the stat sheet certainly put him on the map last season — he recorded 31 rebounds in one game — as he averaged 12 points, nine rebounds and six assists for a Cougars team that surprised a lot of people.
They won’t surprise anybody this upcoming season after a dominant showing in the summer state tournament.
“It was really fun,” Diaz said of the state breakdown tournament. “It was nice to get our guys back together. We haven’t played a ton of games as a full team so it was great to get out and play as a group.”
Diaz excels when he can push the pace of the game and has great size for a point guard. He uses that to get to spots on the floor where he can best set up his teammates and on the defensive end where he can pester ball handlers and wreak havoc in the passing lanes. He’s not going to pump up a lot of shots but he’s certainly shown the ability to score when the opportunity presents itself.
Diaz has flown under the radar a bit locally from a recruiting perspective but said he’s drawn some interest from NAIA schools from schools including the University of Charleston in West Virginia, Northeastern State in Oklahoma.
“I don’t know how they found me,” Diaz said with a chuckle. “But I think I’m going to go on visits in the fall. I’ve got some team camps later in the summer at different schools too so I’m pretty wide open.”
