Recruiting Report: Mylik Wilson (2019)
With the release of our rankings for the 2019 class, now is as good a time as any to get to know the top players of the 2019 class, including the colleges that have been talking to them the most. We are going to be starting off with 2019’s top player in 6’3 SG Mylik Wilson.
Heading into last season, there were whispers of how good Rayville could be, in large part because of a family of sophomores that could straight up play. My initial thoughts were that I might check them out this year, but their is no way that a team that is relying mostly on sophomores could be that good. I could not have been more wrong. But I also never thought that Mylik Wilson would be considered the best player in the state by now.
I can’t think of a player who has raised his stock more over the course of a year that Mylik has. Over the course of last season, he went from virtually unknown to being considered a top 5 player in his class. He has shown the ability to score from virtually anywhere in the gym, with range extending well beyond the high school 3 pt line. He also has great length, and the ability to jump out the gym. Because of that length and athleticism, he has the ability to be a difference maker on both sides of the ball, something that he considers to be one of his best strengths. “I think I can score the ball really well, and I can play really good on ball defense.”
Even after his sophomore season ended, I still wasn’t totally sold on his ability. He had a great season, but he was doing it for a small 2A school. Outside of Madison Prep, I wasn’t totally sure that he could play as well when the competition level increased. Once again, he has proved me wrong. He has spent the spring playing with the Arkansas Wings on the Nike EYBL, and he has been lighting it up. He has averaged close over 25 points per game during the EYBL sessions, including going for 40 points against NY Rens, going 11-13 from beyond the three point line. As a result of his outstanding play, he was recently invited to Nike’s Elite 100 Camp, being considered one of the top 100 players in the EYBL regardless of grade. This isn’t just because they played on the same AAU team and they share the same first name, but I see a lot of Malik Monk in Mylik Wilson’s game, and I wouldn’t be totally surprised if they end up in similar company within the next few years.
If you would like to know what colleges have been reaching out to Mylik as a result of his tremendous play, that is something that you and him will have in common. “My coach won’t tell me what schools have been asking, because he feels like I won’t play as hard anymore. He’s very old school. But I heard that coaches have been calling.” And with the NCAA rules permitting that schools can contact class of 2019 players soon, I’m sure that we will learn more about his recruitment soon.
Mylik excels not only on the basketball court, but also in the classroom, supporting a 3.8 GPA. He has not taken the ACT yet.
