Recruiting Report: John Carlson (2018)
We recently got our first glimpse at Bondurant-Farrar forward John Carlson, and man can he sky.
The 6-foot-4 stretch-four is certainly one of the bouncier guys in Iowa, and is capable of some electrifying blocks and showstopping jams.
But, for now, it’s college football coaches that are more interested in the athletic senior-to-be.
“For the most part, the interest I’ve got in basketball has been D3. I’ve gotten some letters and texts from Central’s coach and Simpson’s. I haven’t had a lot of recruitment basketball-wise, it’s been more football stuff,” said Carlson.
“But I think I’m a very improved (basketball) player from last year, so we’ll see how this summer goes and I might get a little more attention.”
Between the two sports, Carlson says that basketball could be considered a slight favorite of his, but it’s football he may pursue in college.
“At this point, the money would be in football. I really enjoy football and basketball, I think I’ve always liked basketball just a little more. But at this point my football recruitment is a lot farther ahead than basketball is,” said Carlson.
“I would be interested in pursuing basketball, it would just depend on what opportunities would come, and kind of how that would go.”
The self-described much-improved Carlson, defined his hoops skill-set to PHIA.
“For the most part, just raw athleticism is my best strength; my jumping ability, getting out and running the floor, blocking shots on the defensive end, and being able to outrun and out-jump people on the offensive end,” said Carlson.
This summer he’ll play with Iowa Cornsharks 17U, and will work more on skill stuff.
“I’ve been pretty pleased with my offseason; from last basketball season to now, I’ve gotten more athletic and faster,” he said. “And my shooting is a little bit better, and I’ve got a better mid-range game and my 3s are starting to go down, so that’s good.”
