Recruiting Report 2018: Christian Flaherty
Christian Flaherty, 6’1″, PG, 2018. The Takoma Academy Tigers, Takoma Park, MD. Grassroots, The District Basketball Club 17 & U.
We have seen Christian many times this summer at the DeMatha BSN summer league with the Takoma Academy and the District Basketball Club. We are very impressed with his basketball skills and work ethic. Christian will be entering his 3rd season at the Takoma Academy, located 2 miles outside of Washington, DC. Last season the Tigers played a very tough schedule finishing at 26-15, with Christian leading Takoma in scoring @ 16 ppg, 2 assists, 4.5 rebounds, and several steals per game. He played mostly a combo guard last season, but projects to be a PG in college. This summer Christian is playing for the District Basketball Club 17 & U on the Powerade Grassroots Circuit who are currently 19-5.
Christian says,” It has been a busy summer for basketball since I am playing for the DBC and Takoma Academy. Additionally, I am doing strength training, flexibility, explosion drills, and all types of basketball drills. We have some rigorous workouts with the District Basketball Club, Takoma and on my own. I train a lot with my teammate Christian Turner and his father (Lavaughn) trains us with our strength and conditioning. I work on basketball 6 to 7 days a week and I have improved a lot from last year. I just love to play.”
This summer Christian is working hard on his ball-handling and adds, ” I am working hard to become more of a pure PG and finding my teammates. However, I think I do a good job on keeping everyone locked in, I can score from all 3 levels and I attack the rim very well when I have an opening. Additionally, I am still working on new ways to score depending on how my defender is checking me, but my main focus is improving as a true PG.”
Last week in a summer league game we saw Christian go coast cost and throw down a tomahawk jam beating his defender to the rim in which he displayed speed and high elevation. He adds,”My explosion has improved as well as my overall conditioning. I am in the best shape of my life and I will continue to be. Two of my favorite NBA players I like to study are Russell Westbrook and Kyrie Irving of the NBA.”
Christian is an excellent student and maintains a 3.5 GPA. Lehigh, George Washington University , George Mason University, Florida A & M, Bowie State and Washington Adventist have offered to date.
