Prospect Watch: John Horgan (2018)
Six-foot-3 shooting guard John Horgan led Jamestown in scoring as a junior and has had some big games scoring with the North Dakota Phenom.
Yes the winter was at times tough for the players of Jamestown losing nearly all of their games. But the bright spots were Horgan and Boden Skunberg and both return for next season.
“The ways I grew as a player were that we were such a young team with almost no varsity experience so I wanted to take more leadership and let the other guys know they can count on me,” John said.
“I knew we didn’t have all the talent so I worked as hard as I could every day at practice and gave it my all every game. I grew as a leader and as a player.
“I will always remember the laughs at practice and on bus rides with my buddies and just playing the game I love with some of my best friends.”
Horgan shot over 40 percent from the floor despite constant attention, made 75 percent of his foul shots, and led the team in scoring and assists. But he wants more than that.
“I am wanting to improve my three-point shooting as I didn’t shoot a great percentage last season,” John said. “I also would like to work on my ball handling skills which would help me improve on my attack at the rim.”
John is working on those skills with his team at Jamestown and with the North Dakota Phenom.
“These first couple tournaments have put me against some pretty good opponents,” Horgan said.
“It has taught me how to be more patient for shots and to take better care of the ball. It has given me the chance to work on my defense and play against some really good players.”
Will John play college basketball taking that stroke to the next level (our last viewing of Horgan was him knocking down seven three pointers in a game so the work is paying off).
“I am still on the edge on if I want to play college basketball. I think I want to just play out this AAU season and then winter season and see from there. I have had colleges contact me about playing but I haven’t decided if I want to play for sure.”
John’s main focus is his senior year at Jamestown.
“My goal is to lead my team to the WDA tournament and then hopefully the state tournament,” Horgan said.
“I want to improve on all my stats from last season. I want to do what’s best for my team. I just want to have fun playing the game I have loved since I was little.”
