Prospect Spotlight: Jonquell Dawson (2018)
Jonquell Dawson – 6’7” | W/F | Homewood Flossmoor High School
Jonquell Dawson is coming off a junior season in which he averaged 8.6 points, 11.0 rebounds, 3.1 blocks, and 2.0 steals per game for Homewood Flossmoor. The versatile, long, athletic forward has been expanding his skill set to be a more dynamic player on both ends of the floor. He is currently playing his AAU ball with SYF Players.
As the spring session comes to a close, Dawson spoke about his play and how he is an integral piece to their success. “I’ve been doing alright. I’ve been contributing rebounds, blocks, steals, and baskets.”
Dawson is an elite rebounder ( https://prephoops.com/2017/05/top-10-2018s-best-rebounders/ ) and has the basketball IQ and vision to outlet the ball to start the break. He is good at keeping the ball high on rebounds and scoring on offensive put-backs.
Jonquell is a next level athlete with great defensive instincts. He defends the lane very well and uses his length to both shots and get into passing lanes. Dawson blocks shots but blocks them so that they can be controlled as rebounds and taken the other way on a fast break rather than knock them out of bounds.
As he prepares to have an even better senior season, he is focused on getting better this summer. “Getting in the weight room and getting faster. Just keep grinding and working hard.” When Jonquell adds more strength to his long, lanky frame, he will be one of the hardest players to keep off the glass in the state.
When it comes to his offensive game, he is more comfortable facing the basket and making plays than he is with his back to the basket. “I play the wing. I’ve been working on my game away from the basket lately.”
Dawson is putting in the work to be a force with Homewood Flossmoor. His jump shot was an area of improvement last season as he works on his game away from the basket and he has really shown that he is putting in the time. His touch and form already look better.
Jonquell is looking to play basketball at the next level and is doing whatever it takes to get himself there. “I want to play with people who want to go out there and give it their all. People who want to put in the work encourage each other.”
Jonquell Dawson is an intriguing prospect with his athleticism, length, and aggressive nature. He should be a player that gets a look in the month of July and into his senior season.
