Prospect Spotlight: David Ware (2018)
The talk about AAU vs high school basketball will always be a debate, but the one thing about AAU is that it gives scouts like us a chance to see kids we didn’t get to see during the high school season. That’s exactly what happened at the Hoop Group Southern JamFest a few weekends ago, when I got my first chance to look at LBA Attack this summer.
They almost pulled a huge upset over Team Melo, and on a team full of underrated kids one that stood out was a 6’3” guard named David Ware from Caroline County High School. Despite being named All Conference and leading his team in points and rebounds throughout the season, Ware went unnoticed by us, which may be because it’s his first season playing for LBA Attack.
While he joined a group that had mostly been playing together for years, he says the transition was easier than many would expect.
“We have a lot of good players on our team that have high IQs, so it’s not like I was out of place,” Ware said about coming to LBA Attack. “We all get our share of points and we all contribute as a team, so I don’t feel like I’m missing out if I’m not leading in the stat book I just like winning.”
In their overtime loss to Team Melo, Ware was phenomenal with 18 points and 12 rebounds. He showed the ability to make shots from all over the floor, play on or off the ball and attacked the glass from the guard position well.
“I think I’m a combo guard or a utility guy,” Ware said. “If my team needs me to rebound I’ll rebound, if my team needs me to score I’ll score. Basically whatever the coach needs for that night I’m going to bring it.”
As for how he can improve, Ware is knowledgable in what it takes for everyone to get better.
“I believe in the basis that everyone can get better defensively, get quicker, work on my jump shot and just feel of the game that will make me a better basketball player all around,” Ware said.
While he’s had a good high school career so far, he’s still relatively unknown both by scouts and college coaches across the area. He says that a few division two and division three coaches have reached out, and he got his first call from a division one school in High Point earlier this summer.
As for why he believes coaches should recruit him, it’s all about the mindset.
“I’m always looking to get better and I’m a team basketball player. I’m not looking for anything myself, I just like to win. My favorite part about this game I love is winning.”
Expect a big senior season from Ware, who could emerge as a big time sleeper in the central Virginia area.
