Prospect Spotlight: Corey Friar (2018)
Corey Friar is gearing up for his senior campaign.
The 6’1″, 195-pounder spent this past season playing in the post for Mariner. He’s taking over a guard role where he can showcase his improved shooting and ballhandling skills this upcoming season for Ida Baker.
“What I learned from last season was to always play your game and always believe in your game and you’ll succeed,” Friar told Prep Hoops Florida.
Friar’s main goal this summer is to draw attention. He’s playing for SW Prime this summer. Previously he was with Hoops on Mission and founder Dwayne Jackson.
“I’ve been with Hoops on Mission since March and coach Dwayne is a good guy,” he said. “I never met a guy that cares so much about kids futures and helping out our youth. He puts a lot of effort, heart and time into all this, so shoutout to coach Dwayne.”
Friar first found his love for basketball in the 4th grade just shooting around at the park with the older kids. He started playing organized basketball in 8th grade. On top of that, he plays wide receiver for the varsity football team currently.
“Football helps me on the court in a lot of ways,” he said. “My footwork on the court, running my lane, catching full court passes, my stamina on the court and it makes me a tougher basketball player.”
He pointed to his ability to drive to the basket his biggest strength. Friar is aiming to improve his mid-range game this summer.
No offers or interest have come for Friar yet. He is a strong kid who simply loves the game of basketball. He’s looking to become the first person from his family to go to college and make his mom proud.
“This is the off-season for me, I have to work hard and make them regret sleeping on me,” he said.
Friar is in for a big senior campaign. Whether he earns that first offer or look that soon remains to be seen. I know for sure that he can ball. Friar’s drive to the rack is impressive and that’s something that will help him stand out in July.
