Strengths: Athleticism, Transition Play, IQ
Areas To Improve: Mid-Range, Free Throw Shooting
Bobby “BJ” Corbitt is an intriguing 6’0″ freshman point guard prospect at Greene Central HS in Snow Hill, NC.
He was very much under the radar during the high school season despite leading his junior varsity team to an undefeated record before being moved up to the varsity team. Just a note, the varsity team went 26-2 and was one game away from a state title berth in their own right. While it is indeed too early for projections, he has already shown many of the tools necessary to develop into a college level point guard prospect. He has a solid frame, brimming athleticism and a high basketball IQ that will enable him to adjust without much problem at the varsity level in the coming season.
Corbitt as stated earlier has already shown an advanced IQ and feel for the game that enables him to make difficult plays look relatively easy. He does a great job of retreating out of corners to avoid traps and uses changes of speed with changes of direction very well. In the clip below, you can see he has good habits in transition as he quickly reacts to the defender cutting him off. He changes directions quickly to get to the middle, knifes into the paint then he makes the easy pass leading to a layup. A lot of freshman guards tend to float out to the corner and end up putting themselves in position to have a charge drawn. That is a rarity with Corbitt early on.
Another thing that can’t be underestimated is the confidence he shows at a young age to take long shots in transition. For most kids, the play below results in an immediate substitution. In his case, there wasn’t much uproar at all, which could be a telling factor that he makes shots like this routinely and he makes more good plays than bad plays. Having the ability to make this shot and the confidence to take the shot should bode well in the coming years when playing against varsity competition on the regular or if a clutch shot is needed.
Going forth, should Corbitt continue to improve on his 3 level scoring ability, continue developing his point guard skills, studying film and growing, he could in time become more than another “sleeper” prospect. He’s definitely one to keep an eye on for years to come from the Eastern North Carolina area. His combination of youth, his growing explosiveness, confidence and on court experience should bode well for him and the Greene Central HS basketball program for years to come.
