Nike Elite 100: 2019 Wing Scouting
PrepHoops was in attendance this past week at the prestigious Nike Elite 100 Camp. We have extensive scouting reports on all of the prospects at the event. Here are the best wing prospects we saw out of the class of 2019.
SG/SF Wendell Moore (Cox Mill HS, NC)
Moore came off an impressive run with USA Basketball and was supposed to be one of the top prospects at the event. He proved it! Moore is a smooth wing that has improved his athleticism quite a bit since we saw him last summer. He plays hard and has a scorer’s mentality. At times can over dribble. Much better perimeter shot and stroke than we remembered in the past. He got it off with ease throughout the camp. Also has the ability to win off the dribble whenever he wants. Finishes well at the rack through contact with athleticism and acrobatics. Proved he is a five star prospect that should be a #2 scorer on a title contender in college.
SF Ismael Massoud (MacDuffie HS, MA)
Huge fan of what this 6’7” point forward brings to the table. He was one of the premier passers we saw all week. Really long and lanky wing that can defend multiple positions. His passing is what stood out the most. Found cutters in the half court and had the vision to get it to teammates in transition for easy layups. Feel for the game. Slick handles allowed him to get where he wanted on the floor as he had a couple acrobatic finishes. Good mid-range shooter. Has slight hitch in shot at the top of release. High-major kid that will be a great complimentary player on a big time team.
SF DJ Jeffries (Oliver Branch HS, MS)
This 6’5” prospect is making the transition to being more of a full time wing as it doesn’t appear he is going to grow anymore. He has good size and strength for the small forward position. Athletic kid that likes to attack and finish at the rim. Strong takes to the hoop. Jump shot could be more consistent. Potential as a rangy defender that can guard both forward spots in college.
SG Isaiah Mosley (Rock Bridge HS, MO)
Mosley might have been the biggest breakout player of the camp for me. Long and rangy two guard at 6’3” that goes and gets buckets! He has a free flowing shot that he made at an insane clip all during camp. Plus perimeter shooter that gets it off with elevation from anywhere on the floor. Smooth with the rock as he can create his own shot with his jumper as well as score at the rack with acrobatic finishes. Great finisher at the rim. Elite scorer that can also pass a little too. Displayed above average passing feel for an off guard. No doubt high-major who is about to blow up!
SG Jalen Lecque (Christ School HS, NC)
Lecque is a 6’3” smooth wing that came into the camp with some momentum. As the camp got going he became more comfortable with the setting and started to show his big time shot making ability. Athletic scorer that loves to hit pull up jumpers and drills jumpers even when heavily contested. Also can get to the rim. High-major scorer.
SF Trendon Watford (Mountain Brook HS, AL)
Watford just gets stuff done! He might have been the leading scorer of the entire camp. The Alabama prep standout isn’t the most athletic wing in the class by far, but he is extremely crafty and knows how to use angles to get to the hoop. Plays with a relentless motor. Strong slasher that finishes exceptionally well at the rim. He will be an outstanding college player with his ability to score and bring intensity to the table every single game.
SF Chandler Lawson (Hamilton HS, TN)
Lawson is the younger brother of KJ and Dedric who are now both at Kansas. Some said Chandler might be the best when the other two were going through the prep ranks. Definitely projects as a D1 kid that as a prospect would probably be the second best of the brothers. Good size at 6’6”, but will need to add significant strength going forward. Length plays well on the defensive end and can shoot it from mid-range with ease. Would like to see a little more dog in his game as he cruises too often.
SF Michael Christmas (Landstown HS, VA)
This 6’4” wing opened our eyes with his perimeter shooting. He was insanely hot in one of the games as he couldn’t miss form deep. Drilled threes from both off the catch and pulling up off the bounce. Gets elevation off the floor with a pure stroke. Also crashes the glass at a nice level on the offensive end. Potential 3 and D guy at the next level.
SG Patrick Williams (West Charlotte HS, NC)
Williams has size at 6’6” that makes him intriguing. His go to is his mid-range game. Excellent shooter from 15-18 pulling up. Drilled them all camp from that distance. Strongly built kid with broad shoulders that can also slash it. Physical getting to the hoop with an explosive first step off the bounce.
SF Romeo Weems (New Haven HS, MI)
Weems is coming off a great experience playing with USA Basketball on the U16 team which won a gold medal. He was good, but not dominant at Nike Elite 100. His physical profile really stands out with quality strength, broad shoulders, and moves well for his size. Making the transition from more of a four to a small forward. He seems much more comfortable playing on the perimeter than when we saw him last summer. Handles have improved. Like what he brings to the table as a wing defender.
SG PJ Fuller (Nathan Hale HS, WA)
Fuller is one of my favorite players in this class. He is a fun kid that other players like to be around. He plays well in transition getting out and making plays above the rim. Got to the hoop on the regular in the games we saw. Was a bit streaky shooting the ball. Had one game where he struggled and the other one was lights out. We believe his jump shot will be a go to weapon for him at the next level.
SF Darren Jones (Cajon HS, CA)
Jones is a 6’6” combo forward that will need to add strength on as his career progresses. Bouncy prospect that gets on the offensive glass. Also displayed he could take his man off the dribble form the mid-range area. Projectable prospect with developmental upside.
SG Tyrese Maxey (South Garland HS, TX)
Maxey is a 6’1” scoring combo guard. Big time athlete at the wing position that is smooth and explosive getting to the rim. Loves to get out in transition as a finisher. Mixes in runners/floaters on occasion, but the majority of his damage comes playing above the rim.
SG Mylik Wilson (Rayville HS, LA)
This 6’1” two guard out of Louisiana plays best in the open floor. Had several explosive jams in transition showing acceleration blowing past his opponents. Also made a few nice passes in the open floor. Mixed in some jumpers too. Solid prospect with upside. Would like to see him grow a bit more.
SG Xzavier Jones (Martin Luther HS, WI)
Jones is a 6’3” wing that has quality size and athleticism from the two guard position. At times can rely too much on his athleticism. Has potential on a three ball.
SG Trey Williams (The Conoly HS, TX)
Williams is a two guard that has combo guard qualities. At 6’3” the strong guard has excellent vision making plays for others when plays breakdown or in transition. Found teammates on a regular basis right under the hoop for easy buckets. Finishes well himself and is a rim runner in transition that had several dunks in that fashion.
SF Juwan Gary (Gray Academy, NC)
Gary is a 6’5” small forward that uses his long strides to attack getting to the hoop. Also utilizes a runner in the lane. Would like to see more consistent dominance out of him as he is a very talented prospect.
SG Rashawn Blakney (Goretti HS, MD)
Blakney got it going as the camp progressed. He is a 6’3” shooting guard that is a freak athlete. Elite transition player that uses his speed and hops to get scores in the open floor. Also displayed he is a quality catch and shoot threat from beyond the arc.
SG Kyle Sturdivant (Norcross HS, GA)
This 6’1” combo guard is a broad shouldered and strong wing that isn’t the most athletic, but just gets stuff done. Scorer that has good form on shot and is especially effective from mid-range. Active defender and has a knack for always being around the ball. Tough player.
SG Marcus Watson (Buford HS, GA)
Watson stands at 6’4” and is an elite transition athlete. Pushes it in the open floor and finishes above the rim. Also displayed he has range on his three point shot pulling up from deep on multiple occasions. Has go to scorers ability if he can add a mid-range game to his repertoire.
SG Isaac Okoro (McEachern HS, GA)
Okoro is a 6’4” two guard that is a born scorer. High flyer that gets to the rim. Goes through contact and has a tendency to get fouled at a high rate. Great transition player! Developmental upside especially if he can add a consistent jumper to his game.
SF David Roddy (Breck HS, MN)
This 6’5” 253 pound wing is a very thick small forward that can really shoot the basketball. Was impressive when we saw him off the catch with a quick release. Also is a solid distributor.
