Drake Team Camp: Sunday Recaps
9:00 Liberty (MO) 50 vs Johnston 38
There was no Camden Vander Zwaag (Air Force elite camp) and no Peyton Williams (baseball), and that hurt this new-look Dragons squad Sunday morning. The good thing about being without star players though, is others get a chance to step-up and show what they’ve got. We know Bo Sandquist can ball, his shot wasn’t falling with regularity like it normally does, but the 2018 guard finished with seven points. Another 2018 guard who will contribute this season, Boston Grimes, finished with nine points, all in the second half. And a pair Dragons frosh-to-be impressed, that’s Brees Proctor (nine points) and Johnny Leth (eight points). For the winning team, it was 2020 wing Grant Stubbs who stole the show, the sophomore-to-be notched a game-high 17 points in the win.
10:00 Davenport West 69 vs Des Moines North 58
This was a nice display of two very good teams, and they could possibly be two of the best in Iowa next season. Davenport West features a trio of 2018s that can cause match-up issues, especially for a smaller team like North. Brett Erwin goes 6’8 and dropped 21 points on the Polar Bears, all at the rim. Trey Sampson goes 6’7 and can score from deep, from putting the ball on the floor, and at the rim; he scored 12. Those two are a perfect compliment to speedy 5’7 point guard Kenny Clay, who was having his way from start to finish en route to 18 points of his own. Lino Malual was the best player for North in this one. He scored a team-high 19 points, including an electric two-hand slam in transition (assist Tyreke Locure)
11:00 Creston 60 vs Vinton-Shellsburg 46
It was the Evan Jacobson show from start to finish in this one, and just like he did at the Urbandale Team Camp earlier this month, the 5’8 Creston point guard dazzled. The senior-to-be scored 19 first half points, and added 10 more in the second half en route to a game-high 29 points. Vinton-Shellsburg lost a lot of scoring last season, but has a good one coming back with 6-foot-2 wing Justin Bartz. He was shooting it well from deep and finished with a balanced 25 points for the Vikings.
12:00 St. Edmond 60 vs Madrid 45
It became very clear, very quickly, that St. Edmond 2019 guard Andrew Gibb is indeed one of Iowa’s truly elite shooters. We suspected he was after he posted a 50-50-90 (at least 50% FGs, 50% 3FGs, 90% FTs during a whole season) last season as a sophomore. But watching him hit six 3s on nine attempts in his team’s win Sunday afternoon confirmed that elite status. Gibb is more than just a great shooter, but a solid player in general, he finished with a game-high 27 in this easy win. We were eager to get a first look at Madrid guard Braden Gibbons, who averaged 13 points per game last season as a freshman. He was OK in this one, scoring a team-high nine points. Gibbons will post some nice numbers over the next three seasons.
1:00 Dubuque Hempstead 56 vs DeLaSalle 48
Though it’s just summer ball, this was a monumental win for the Mustangs. We knew they would be one of Iowa’s best teams, the duo of Lucas Duax and Keith Johnson is potent. So we relished the opportunity to check them out against one of Minnesota’s best teams. DeLaSalle has won six straight 3A titles in the North Star State. Early, it looked like the Minnesota boys would cruise to a win. But Curtis Martin, Will Courtney and Co. were tough, played with high motors and made timely shots in the third and fourth quarters; they not only came back to win, but by a relatively wide-margin to boot. It’s such a treat to watch DeLaSalle 2019 point guard Tyrell Terry play. He has an Iowa offer and we see why, he finished with a game-high 25 points. Johnson was tremendous for Hempstead, especially his rim-rattling two-hand slam in the first quarter, he finished with a team-high 17 points. Martin added 15 for the Mustangs, and Courtney chipped in with 12.
