Council Bluffs Lincoln Team Camp: Game Recaps
9:00: CB Lincoln 61 vs Glenwood 59 (OT)
In my first-ever in person viewing of CB Lincoln wing Troy Houghton, the 6-foot-3 rising senior did not disappoint. He notched eight second half points including the game-winner below, in which he commanded the ball as time-expired and took his man off the bounce to get free for a 7-footer. Glenwood is definitely going to be a top team in 3A, and even without standout small forward Andrew Blum, the Rams nearly knocked off one of 4A’s more formidable squads. Nate Mohr was especially good for the Rams, he’ll shoot from everywhere and anywhere, and scored 15 points in the second half alone. Tyler Reiss did something we don’t see often (if ever), when he knocked down four straight triples in the second half.

9:55: Sergeant Bluff-Luton 85 vs AHST 50
It was the Conner Groves show for most of this one and he proved that he belongs in the conversation for one of Iowa’s elite shooters by canning seven 3s en route to a game-high 25 points. The 5-foot-11 shooting guard was the best player on the floor, and despite having its top three scorers gone from last season’s state-qualifying squad, there’s a very decent cast of guys for Groves to play with. AHST was led by sturdy rising senior RJ Harris, he averaged 18 points per game as a junior and netted 13 in this one.
10:50: Valley 51 vs Sioux City West 49
About half of Valley’s team made the trip to Council Bluffs, and regular contributors Luke Sueppel, Blake Brinkmeyer, Noah Samples and Mike Brown were able to get by Cliff McCray and Co. in an overtime contest. But it wasn’t easy, McCray took his game into high-gear late, and nearly single-handedly erased what was a eight point Valley lead with just three minutes to go. McCray looks like a potential high-level prospect. Brinkmeyer is for sure a high-level prospect (Northern Iowa offer), and he showed it when he smashed home a one-hand slam through traffic in the second half. He also swatted a slew of shots on the defensive end. He and the Tigers could be 4A’s preseason No.1 this fall in our poll.
11:45: Harlan 72 vs Benson 51
Harlan is getting adjusted to life without star point guard Caleb Rasmussen, and the wheels are in motion this summer for the Cyclones. They walloped this Omaha program, and 6-foot4 forward Shane Chamberlain was a big reason why. The big and versatile small forward looks like he’ll have a big winter. He’s definitely the team’s leader and best player, and will likely see significant increases to his 15.2 points and 6.2 rebounds from a season ago.
12:40: Creighton Prep 66 vs Hoover 59
This was the most interesting match-up of the day, as one of Nebraska’s best programs and one of Iowa’s best squared off. There’s no more Douglas Wilson for the Huskies, but that doesn’t mean they’ll fall off completely. Hoover never falls off, and with this group of guys coming back, they’ll again contend for a Metro Conference title. Kenny Quinn and Devontae Thedford bring the experience, Nick Johnson will do his best to try and fill the void left in the paint by Wilson, and brothers Hosea Treadwell and Manny Austin could light up the nets as a shooting duo. Austin notched a game-high 19 points in the loss; he’s going to be a freshman. Former Dowling point guard Thomas Faber transferred to Creighton Prep earlier this spring, but was not in attendance today.
1:35 Dowling 61 vs Sioux City West 49
The Maroons will be one of the CIML’s best teams, and they unveiled what one player called “the future of the program” in this one with rising frosh Ryan Riggs. The 6-foot-7 forward was impressive while scoring 10 points in the win, and is a tall and lanky prospect with a very high ceiling. Sam Ingoli was tough as usual, and scored a game-high 13 points to go along with a handful of assists. Rising junior Jack Lyman caught fire for the Maroons, netting four 3s in a short burst, he finished with 12 points. This Wolverines team took some losses today, but they have a good team — most team’s in Iowa would lose twice if they had to play Valley and Dowling. Woodward Central transfer Tyler Walker got into his groove in the loss, and like Lyman scored 12 points on four triples. Iowa’s 20th-ranked 2019, Cliff McCray, was quiet in this one, scoring just four points.
