Asbury University Team Camp Standouts
Asbury University held it’s Varsity and JV team camp this week. The camp featured a number of Kentucky teams and one team from Indiana (Cascade High School). Prep Hoops takes a look at the Varsity standouts from three days on the hardwood.
Cobe Penny – 6’0 [CG] Anderson County (2018)
Penny is hard to stop down hill and finishes well around the basket. He’s also lethal from beyond the arc when he gets going. We’ve seen Cobe play a number of times, but this team camp afforded us the ability to see him show off some of his sneaky hops. Penny had a total of four dunks during the camp, displaying quite the vertical for his 6’0 frame. Most impressive was a left handed monster jam in transition and one off an alley-oop. D-II powerhouse Bellarmine University was in attendance to watch on the last day of camp. Penny averaged 23 points and 4.3 rebounds for Anderson County as a junior last season.
Carter Moss – 6’0 [SG] Garrard County (2018)
Moss is a shooter with range for the Garrard County Golden Lions. He shot 40% from 3-pt field goal range as a junior last season and continued to shoot it well from 3-pt land at Asbury. His quick (and high) release allows him to shoot over taller defenders. Look for Carter to possibly gain some interest from Divison III or NAIA schools around Kentucky. He averaged just under 5 points per game as a junior, we anticipate that number to increase to double-digits come basketball season.
Dalton DuBois – 6’5 [F] Cascade High School (IN) (2018)
The 6’5 stretch 4 from Indiana showed an ability to play inside and out. As an incoming senior, DuBois’ body is already small college ready for that position. DuBois struggled to handle the pressure of teams throwing multiple defenders at him in the post, once he learns to handle that adversity watch for him to really take off. One-on-one in the post he can be nearly unstoppable against like defenders. Dalton has a laser shot from behind the arc, finding it’s target more often than not. He is able to run the floor well and uses his body to finish against contact. As a junior, DuBois averaged 16 points per game and 9.8 rebounds while shooting over 45% from the field.
De’Ante Sanon – 6’3 [W] East Jessamine (2018)
A pleasant surprise at team camp, Sanon was all over the place. Rebounding the basketball, hitting open jumpers, knocking down clutch 3’s, and finishing strong around the rim. Sanon can play at the small college level. He’s quick and athletic, both vertically and in his ability to sprint up and down the court. He averaged 10 points and 7’2 rebounds as a junior.
Chase Phillips – 6’0 [G] Lincoln County (2018)
Phillips can do a number of positive things for Lincoln County. He seems to be able to control the offense when the ball is in his hands at the point and find open teammates. He can also knock down open shots from 3. A lefty, he is also capable of finishing with either hand around the basket. Last season Phillips averaged just over 8 points per game as a junior and is Lincoln’s returning leading scorer.
Austin Bennett – 6’2 [G] Buckhorn High (2019)
The junior-to-be showed that he can be lethal from a number of different spots on the floor. Bennett can knock down open 3’s, pull-up off the dribble, and finish with contact at the rim. Already holding an offer from NAIA powerhouse Georgetown College, Bennett is sure to add more interest going forward. He averaged 16.7 points and 6 rebounds as a sophomore last season.
Dontaie Allen – 6’6 [W] Pendleton County (2019)
Allen, holding D1 offers from Eastern Kentucky, Northern Kentucky, and Morehead State, proved to be unstoppable at times in Pendleton’s three games at Asbury. Each game Pendleton itself in a tough spot at some point. Each game Allen found a way to bring his team back and walk away with a win. Stats were not officially kept during the event, but Allen did drop 40 in a comeback win. Pendleton won all three of their games. Allen averaged 29.1 points and 8 rebounds as a sophomore.
Dalton Bruner – 5’10 [G] West Jessamine (2019)
Another kid that is super quick and all over the place on both ends of the floor. Bruner may be undersized but has a ton of heart. In three games he showcased a number of on the court attributes that allowed him to average 14 points per game as a sophomore. He also showed an increased ability to lead his team.
