Yancey County’s Big Three
Yancey County’s Big Three
Freshman usually play junior varsity basketball and move up to varsity as a sophomore sometimes and historically as juniors. That is not the case for Lucas Jenkins, Justus Shelton and Callin Randolph at Mountain Heritage HS in Burnsville, North Carolina.
All three freshman enjoyed a solid first year at Mountain Heritage as freshman playing meaningful minutes on the varsity level. All three are playing this spring/summer with Team Loaded 704 coached by Anthony Randolph.
Randolph is the piece of the three-headed monster that is the most fundamentally sound player of the bunch. He is a pure shooter that has a beautiful release and stroke. He can score off the dribble and has as high of a basketball IQ as I have ever witnessed for a freshman in this area. He knows where to put the ball and does whatever it takes to win. He is a good passer and sees the game a couple of plays ahead.
Shelton is a 6-foot-8 post player that may end up being as heavily recruited player as we have seen out of the small town of Burnsville. He is able to catch the ball in the post and score. Great defensive big that is willing to mix it up. He is Yancey’s best inside defender. He understands the game at a very high level. He has a great low post game and can finish with multiple moves and is the team’s best inside passer. He can step out and knock down the 15-foot jump shot and can block shots with his timing. He has the bloodline for being a top-tier talent as his mother played in the WNBA and is the girl’s head coach for the Cougars.
Jenkins is a 6-foot-3 shooting guard that knows how to score the basketball. He is a good defender that keeps his man in front and is hard to get by him. Jenkins is an agile wing that can put the ball on the floor and score, effective mid and long range shooter, strong rebounder that can defend all 5 positions and he’s not afraid to get on the floor. Runs the court well and can finish in a crowd. Plays as hard as anyone on the team and gives all-out effort.
