The USA U16 training camp roster just grew to 32 players total. Eight players were added to the then 24 man roster yesterday. Two of those players represent the Bluegrass State.
Louisville Trinity’s David Johnson (2019) and Bowling Green’s Zion Harmon (2021) were added to the roster and will have an opportunity to earn a spot on the final 12 man roster beginning June 1 in Colorado Springs at the U.S. Olympic Training Center. The underclassmen hope to represent the USA at the 2017 FIBA Americas U16 Championship. The 2017 FIBA Americas U16 Championship will be held June 14-18 in Formosa, Argentina, and the top four finishing teams will qualify for the 2018 FIBA U17 World Cup.
Johnson was recently ranked one of the top 50 players in the 2019 class by Rivals.com. His sophomore season at Trinity saw him average 10.5 points per game. This summer Johnson is playing with one of the nation’s top adidas Gauntlet programs, the Louisville Magic. He currently holds offers from Louisville, Xavier, and Cincinnati.
Harmon is having one of, if not the most successful 8th grade season of any high school basketball player in recent memory. As Bowling Green’s floor general, Harmon helped lead the Purples to the Kentucky Sweet Sixteen state tournament championship, averaging 16.8 points per game – scoring 21 points in the state championship game. He is ranked as the top 8th grader in the country and is continuing to impress this summer while playing in the Nike EYBL with Boo Williams. It is thought that he is the only 8th grader ever invited to the camp.
Former players to be invited to the U16 training camp include Bradley Beal, Jahlil Okafor, Jabari Parker, and Jared Vanderbilt.
