Tourney Preview: Hoopsource West Coast Showcase
Hoopsource Basketball is hosting it’s annual West Coast Showcase this weekend in gyms throughout Portland and Vancouver. The event which has over 300 teams registered has become one of the premier non viewing period events on the west coast. Prep Hoops Oregon will be on hand throughout the weekend evaluating players and teams and conducting interviews for feature pieces on the site.
The 17U brackets are split into two groups, D1 & D2, with the D1 bracket featuring the bulk of the best teams. Some of the featured teams in this group include PBC Red, a mix mashed group of 2017, 2018, & 2019 players including Khalid Thomas from West Linn and a pair of talented 2019 guards in Ty Rankin & Aaron Deloney from Grant HS. Team Jones Hedgecock may have the most intriguing 2018 prospect in 6’8 post Boston Thompson from Nyssa HS in eastern Oregon. Thompson has developed in relative obscurity, 6+ hours away from the Portland Metro area. Team Fly features 5 players that are ranked in the Top 30 of our (soon to be released) updated 2018 rankings. Those include 6’6 post Austin Dufort from Tigard, 6’6 wing Dalton Renne from Banks, 6’2 guard Dyshawn Hobson from Corvallis, 6’7 post Matt Van Tassel from Mt. View, & Filip Fullerton a 6’8 post from Southridge HS. Elite 24 Black & Volt are both entered in the D1 portion of the bracket and both feature a variety of players that are sure to move on to the college ranks. Jalen Thompson a 6’2 wing from West Linn HS is the highest ranked player for Black and 6’5 forward Aaron Baune from McMinnville HS is the highest rated player on the Volt roster.
The 16U bracket has 3 groups of play, with the D1 division featuring teams such as Elite 24, Benchwarmers, Rose City Navy & Red, and Team Fly Anderson. 16U brackets have been a little hard to gauge this spring with the majority of the highest rated players in our 2019 rankings choosing to play up to 17U divisions. We are excited to see how the depth is in this class.
The 15U division features a solid group of teams that we are excited to check out. The Portland Rebels who earned a top 5 ranking in our first Fab 5 Team ranking of the year are lead by Gabe Reichle, a 6’0 point guard and Dakota Reber a 6’4 forward who both saw varsity minutes for state champion Wilsonville. Other Oregon teams expected to contend this weekend include Elite 24, Benchwarmers, and Maeko.
Teams from the state of Oregon dominate our focus, but the line up of out of state is also impressive and should set up for a great weekend of basketball action. For more information on the tournament or to access a schedule, visit www.hoopsourcebasketball.com
