Super Team Showcase Sunday Standouts (Part 2)
The Annual DMVelite Super Team Showcase played host to local 16U and 17U AAU programs as not only a platform for kids to showcase their skills, but also earn bragging rights over their rival teams.
It’s a safe bet to assume that the future of DMV basketball is in on the right track after observing the wealth of talent with just a handful of the teams who took part. We aim to highlight those who stood out from the rest below.
’19 MAKHI MITCHELL | 16U DC BLUE DEVILS
Makhi Mitchell continues to show why he is considered the top local prospect in the 2019 class. At 6’10, the sturdily built forward is very skilled and when engaged can dominate both ends of the floor. Mitchell actively contests shots around the basket, and takes pride in defense as well as finishing through contact.
’18 LJ OWENS | 17U DC BLUE DEVILS
We were impressed with how well LJ Owens scored the ball from various levels of the floor, but also how well he defends on and off the ball. Owens has good length, and is a sneaky athlete with a high motor. Owens has seen his recruitment trend up since the spring live period, and that trend should continue through the summer.
’19 MARVIN PRICE | 16U DC BLUE DEVILS
Marvin Price continues to produce at a high level for the DC Blue Devils, and he even got some work in with the 17U squad this weekend. The strong lefty is very aggressive off the bounce offensively, and can finish at the rim but is also adept at creating space for his shot on the perimeter.
’18 CAMERON SAVAGE | 16U DISTRICT BASKETBALL CLUB
The 16U District Squad clearly missed their leader in Cam Savage, who was absent for a 1 point sudden death victory in their first game. Savage returned for DBC’s huge win over Team Thrill, and his impact was very evident on both sides of the floor. The lead guard out of South Lakes fared well in his matchup with the Thrill backcourt, and led his team in scoring while providing tenacious defense and leadership.
’20 ANTHONY THOMAS | 16U TEAM ST8MENT
This was our first opportunity to watch Anthony Thomas in person, and he made a nice first impression. The 6’6 wing is wiry, but very strong and energetic. Thomas clearly enjoys playing the game, and can play it at a very high level. Thomas shot the ball well from the perimeter, but is also a very good slasher and creative finisher around the basket.
