Super Team Showcase Sunday Standouts (Part 1)
The Annual DMVelite Super Team Showcase played host to local 16U and 17U AAU programs as not only a platform for kids to showcase their skills, but also earn bragging rights over their rival teams.
It’s a safe bet to assume that the future of DMV basketball is in on the right track after observing the wealth of talent with just a handful of the teams who took part. We aim to highlight those who stood out from the rest below.
’19 JAMES BISHOP | 16U TEAM THRILL
Mount Saint Joseph guard James Bishop is off to a hot start this spring, and he continued to tear it up. Bishop pumped in an easy 17 points in a win over MD Movement, and showed confidence in his perimeter jumper both from the catch and off the bounce. Bishop is the leading scorer in the UAA 16U division, and he showed why on Sunday.
’19 JAY HEATH | 16U TEAM ST8MENT
Jay Heath is a big time player, and we saw why in Team St8ment’s buzzer-beating win over the DC Blue Devils. One thing we liked about heath is how well he attacks the boards from his position. Heath is a prolific threat in transition, and when his shot is falling from the perimeter can be an extremely difficult matchup given his unique blend of size, athleticism and toughness.
’19 BRYCEN HILL | 16U MD MOVEMENT
Brycen Hill was probably the best shooter we saw all weekend. The 6’2 guard out of St. John’s Catholic Prep buried five first half threes on his way to 20 points despite a loss to Team Thrill. Hill hit six threes total in that game, and showcased limitless range and a lightning quick release.
’18 DARIUS HINES | 17U TEAM TAKEOVER ORANGE
Concordia University Head Coach Brian Sondey was in to see Darius Hines of Bishop Ireton, who just received an offer from the New York based Division Two program. Hines poured in 13 first half points against the UAA DC Blue Devils, and Coach Sondey was thoroughly impressed. Hines is looking more and more like a division one guard prospect, and he impressed in an interesting matchup with St. Joseph’s commit Jared Bynum.
’19 MEKHI LONG | 16U TEAM ST8MENT
Mekhi Long is one of the most versatile players we’ve seen in this region, and we saw why on Sunday. Long can defend any position on the floor, and is capable of handling pressure and initiating offense in the half court as well as in transition. Long is a tenacious rebounder with good size at 6’7, and continues to improve as he matures and grows into his body. With recent offers under his belt from Kansas State and Rhode Island, it appears that Long’s recruitment is set to explode.
