Spiece Run N Slam: Friday Notes
Friday night at the Spiece Fieldhouse is always a great place to watch a game. The Run-N-Slam event always showcases some of the top talent from around the Midwest and with that, it really allows you to discover new players or some start to breakout. We discuss what we saw on this night.
Musa Jallow Gets Hot
Playing with Team Blaze Select has been an interesting ride and on Friday night, 2018 wing Musa Jallow put his team on his back and carried them to a big opening night win over Grand Rapids Storm 2018. He scored 24 points in the game with 22 of them coming in the first half. He hit four threes in the first half and really showcased an improved jumper.
Jallow has really picked up his production this spring and the jump shot is a big part of it. He’s always been a tall, athletic wing but now with the production stepping up, he’s warranting the high-major looks, not because of his future potential as much as his ability right now.
Two New Bigs To Watch In 2018
Spiece Indy Heat Red 2018 provided us with a couple new names to watch out for in 2018. Size is always coveted so when Asher Blum and Lucas Lehrman were playing well tonight, it was worth a watch.
Blum, a 6’7 forward from Warsaw (IN), is more of a wing forward at this point. A bit more mobile and lean, playing along the arc more. He’s a decent rim protector right now but could end up a ton more productive as he adds strength to the frame. He’s got to also add a perimeter jumper to stretch the floor but the bones are there for him to be a solid prospect in the class.
Lehrman was the more dominant one in the game we saw. At 6’8, he’s a lean but strong post forward who had a couple really athletic dunks where he did a drop step to his left for a two footed jump. He’s really mobile for his size and can get up and down the floor really well. He’s a little more aggressive at this point and could really rise up the rankings if he can show this type of play every time out.
Jerome Hunter Looks To Breakout
One of the most impressive players in a game we have seen not only tonight but this entire summer was that of Pickerington North (OH) wing Jerome Hunter. The 6’7 lanky wing was nasty at times creating on the perimeter with a solid pull-up jumper and then would mix it up with a drive through the lane and finesse finish with length.
For a player his size, his handles are really impressive and look like it could end up being a part of his game that allows him to become a next level player. He’s really dynamic because along with those handles, he has a really solid jumper and even showed the ability to play strong on the glass, rebounding at a high rate. Also loved that he threw in a mid-range post up that he hit for a turnaround jumper. He’s already got a slew of High Major interest but that should be increased if he is playing like this in July.
